A new multi-storey office complex is currently underway on Bank Street in Whangarei. Coresteel Buildings is Northland’s solution for commercial and industrial steel building construc- tion. The innovative steel building technology has allowed for impressive local builds for companies including PlaceMakers, Kamo Vets, Te Ora Hou, Pirtek, Fonterra, Ballance, Dive Tutukaka, Warren Hay Marine, Marine North, Cracker Jack, Black- wood’s, Ten4 Engineering, Commercial Diesel and many more. At present Coresteel Buildings Northland is con- structing the largest Coresteel building ever made in New Zealand. The Hermpac facility in Ruakaka will offer over 12,000sqm of floor area. It uses the Coresteel Buildings Tapered Box Beam system, which is manufactured by folding two halves of steel plate and welding them together to form a box. The Tapered Box Beam is used for spans from 20-75m and the box is tapered through its length, utilising only the amount of steel required, which reduces the weight/cost without affecting structural integrity. An absence of knee and apex braces means more usable space within the building. The other main system offered by Coresteel Buildings is a patented Bracketless Portal System constructed using cold formed flat Z450 galvanised coil. Using this system typical clear spans range from 9m to 30m, with no obtrusive knee or apex braces. “Primary and secondary sections are fully-bolted (not TEK screwed). The system allows steel columns and rafters to be nested together and directly bolted, rather than being joined with a bracket. “This system produces a stronger connection without the need for additional obtrusive knee- bracing. “The system supports buildings of virtually any size and allows people to make the most of the internal space of their building,” explains James. He says both Coresteel Buildings systems make it the obvious choice for commercial and industrial buildings in Northland. HILLCON Structures is a new venture for HILL- CON Group and will be the face of the company’s multistorey building division. Joel and James say that HILLCON Group is proud to be a Northland business and as such there is a real focus on supporting the local community wherever possible. HILLCON Group is a keen sup- porter of community teams, events and initiatives alongside national initiatives. The Group employs around 30 team members plus apprentices along with local contractors mak- ing it a significant employer for the region. Joel and James are also proud to be local and boast extensive experience in the construction industry. Both take a hands on approach to the company keeping quality high and projects on time and on budget. James joined the group in 2006, bringing to the table a BSc(Hons) in quantity surveying, and experience working in the UK and New Zealand. He is also a Licensed Building Practitioner and was a board member of the Northland NZIOB for five years. In 2016 Joel joined the company and is the point of contact for customers during the management and coordination of HILLCON Group’s projects.
