The company entered the New Zealand market in 1996 providing local businesses primary packaging for glass, PET and cans, as well as corrugated fibre boxes, logistics and recycling. Visy Fibre NZ general manager Aaron Ashby says Visy has fostered long term relationships and become a trusted partner to local industry with Visy’s integrated local supply chain across New Zealand providing supply reliability, ensuring businesses can manufacture and transport product without disruption. “Our relentless focus on our customers means we are a one stop shop for their packaging, recycling and logistics needs. We offer our customers a comprehensive range of sustainable glass, cardboard, plastic and can packaging,” he says. Visy’s presence in New Zealand is substantial, with 11 facilities spread across key locations including Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch, Nelson and Napier. The company’s manufacturing is based in Auckland and Hamilton with state-of-the-art plants showcasing the company’s commitment to cutting-edge technologies. Aaron says that Visy continues to make significant investments to enhance its offering. in partnership with the New Zealand Government and Auckland City Council a recent $16m almost total rebuild of Visy’s Auckland material recovery facility included installation of new sorting technology and has seen an increase in capacity by 30%. Visy holds the recycling contract for Auckland City and Aaron says that 100% of the glass collected is recycled into Visy product. “We’re transforming Auckland’s recycling into new sustainable packaging. The upgrade means this facility can now precisely and comprehensively sort household recycling, enhancing recycling in the region. It allows us to create higher quality output and capture more resources from household recycling,” says Aaron. Visy also places a strong emphasis on education and community engagement. As an example the Auckland facility upgrade also included a redesign of its education space, which was recognised in national awards. Aaron says that the Visy recycling education team designed the interactive and multi-functional space, where they conduct educational sessions for businesses, schools, and community groups. “Our commitment to a circular economy goes beyond our packaging, the use of recycled materials in the design of our upgraded education space is a good example,” says Aaron. Visy now operates over more than 140 sites throughout Australasia and has trading offices across Asia and the USA and employs over 7,000 employees. Over the years Visy has continued to grow and innovate. For example despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, in 2021 Visy demonstrated its commitment to expansion by acquiring Owens Illinois Glass, bolstering its manufacturing capabilities and offering an even broader range of services to customers. There has also been considerable growth of Visy Logistics, which has moved to a full freight service with onshore and offshore scale. “We are well placed to lead the packaging circular economy. Our significant materials recovery and recycling operations underpin our circular model. We sort recyclables from kerbside recycling bins and re-process them back into sustainable packaging.” Aaron says that Visy’s commitment to excellence extends beyond its products and operations. The company places a strong focus on its employees, fostering a can-do culture that encourages innovation and collaboration. Aaron says that due to the scope of Visy’s operations there are many career paths for people. From its humble beginnings to becoming a global leader, the company’s dedication to innovation, responsible practices, and community engagement remains at the heart of its operations, says Aaron. “As Visy looks ahead to the future, it continues to demonstrate that success and sustainability go hand in hand, creating a better world. “With a global footprint and access to the latest insights and technologies, Visy aims to stay ahead in the packaging industry, creating enduring value for customers, partners, and communities alike.” “We are well placed to lead the packaging circular economy.
