The facility has been named Turanga Whetu, which translates to Starbase, and reflects the place where Seeka’s RSE Stars will call their home, and also references the Southern Cross star constellation, prominent in our night sky. With capacity to accommodate 140 people, Turanga Whetu is a world-class facility, purpose designed and built with Seeka’s RSE workforce in mind, and will double the footprint of the previous portacom accommodation, which will be removed. “Turanga Whetu is fresh, modern, has plenty of storage, and will be a very comfortable and warm accommodation,” says CEO Michael Franks. “The building is shaped like a W, with approximately seventy individual units coming off the outer wings, while modern kitchen facilities, very nice lounge areas, and other amenities are centrally located. There will be a grassed area outside, along with provision for a BBQ and volleyball court. There is already a garden area where people can grow their own vegetables if they wish.” Built adjacent to a coolstore, orchard storage and administration building on 2 hectares of land already owned by Seeka, the new accommodation facility is close to kiwifruit orchards and within 20 minutes from Seeka’s major packhouses.
