Michael explains that there were a number of key drivers for developing the accommodation facility including the high demand for RSE seasonal workers, whether in the packing, repacking or pruning season, to complement the local workforce. “Prior to the construction of this facility, we had RSE workers located around a number of places and some of those places were not as good as they could be. “We don’t always have certainty of supply because sometimes you are not sure when workers are coming or not coming, and it’s not economical to be paying for rental accommodation when it is empty. “This new facility allows us to have a high standard of purpose-built accommodation, where everyone is concentrated in one location. And we will always have it there on standby for when it is needed. Most of our RSE workers come from the Pacific Islands, and they are happy to be co-located, so this kind of accommodation suits them. And it is safe. We have our pastoral care all in one location, so it’s ideal really.” The building was designed by Hamilton architectural practice Five AM Design Studio, with Landforce Developments awarded the contract to build it following a competitive tender process.
