We deal with a $50 purchases right up to $7.2b companies. We manufacture for customers all around New Zealand, Australasia and Hong Kong. Nobody really knows what we do here,” says company director Andre Panszczyk who owns Cairnscorp with wife Karen Cairnscorp makes canvas, PVC and polyethylene products including shade sails, PVC screens, ziptrak screens, awnings, outdoor blinds, dropdown screens, truck curtains, agricultural chute socks, machinery covers, bike covers, boat covers and upholstery, canvas bags, cat and dog beds, commercial awnings, cricket pitch covers, equine accessories, flags, glasshouse screens, horse truck accessories, nets for sports fields, outdoor furniture, piano covers, tarpaulins, welding screens and many more. All products are bespoke and made by hand in New Zealand from its Pukekohe factory. The company can also undertake repairs. “Our portfolio is huge,” says Andre. “We make 2500 completely different products each year. We are able to manufacture items from drawings supplied by clients or designed in-house to their specifications.” Clients span industries including domestic, equine, marine, farming, automotive, schools, kindergartens, sports groups and hospitality to name but a few. Andre says the company has some significant international clients including one it manufactures large industrial PVC speed doors for, which must go up 80,000-100,000 times in a year demonstrating the high levels of quality Cairnscorp achieves. Some products are incredibly large, for example it is presently making by hand chicken shed covers for the farming industry that are 32m long x 12m wide and weigh around 200kgs. Its products span right down to making bags with the material that is left over. “We have around 3000 customers that are all different and all have special needs. They are all treated equally whether they buy $50 or $50,000 worth of product,” says Andre citing an important company philosophy. A newer customer base is the caravan and RV market where Cairnscorp is making products from Dry-Mat, which goes under mattress to prevent dampness. Twenty rolls a month of Dry-Mat has quickly grown to 20 rolls a week to meet demand. It’s just one indication of the busy, thriving company that seeks to meet customer needs from its Pukekohe base. The business employs a team of eight staff that boast a wide skillset. Andre says the business is always looking to add to its team and that it can provide great career opportunities. “We need people with open minds who are willing to learn. If you’re good with a tape measure, understand drawings and are willing to learn we will train you. It’s a stable job that people could have for life.” Cairnscorp has been producing high-quality products since 1914 and Andre, who comes from a manufacturing background, and Karen took over the business in 2017. Karen heads the office team and Andre takes on the dayto-day running of the factory sales. The high-quality products are constructed using a combination of industrial sewing machines and hi-frequency welders. The welders enable Cairnscorp to adhere the PVC together without stitching, which makes the product very durable and eliminates the need for thread, which might break down in the future, says Andre. Plant includes two of the longest hi frequency welders in the country at 24m long, a 12m long air welder, portable air welders and 12 sewing machines. Both Andre and Karen believe in supporting the local business community and are members of the Pukekohe Business Association and use local businesses wherever possible. They have also sponsored numerous groups over the years. “We truly believe that manufacturing is the way of growth for local communities and for New Zealand. At Cairnscorp we strive for complete customer satisfaction, making products to create value for our clients.”
