You need a vast amount of knowledge to be able to drive them all and it takes years to get that experience. Dedicated truckies are few and far between. We really appreciate our long serving drivers; they take ownership and pride in the trucks and look after the newer guys. We have a focus on betterment so the longer people stay with us, the better they get.” Presentation is a key ingredient for success in transport, observes Les. “We keep getting the work because people can see that we have clean, well-maintained trucks.” When Les bought his first truck – a small hiab four-wheeler crane truck - he was in his late 20s with 16 years’ freezing works’ experience under his belt. Getting his own truck had long been an ambition. “For me, it is just a passion. As a kid, growing up in a country village, there were always a few trucking operators around the place and we lived next door to one of them and sometimes went for a ride. That’s where it all started. Once I bought my first truck, I started carting construction material and carried on doing that for a few years.” As demand for transport services steadily grew, so too did his business. Hiab crane truck services remain a core part of the offering, with the largest crane truck in the fleet today providing a lifting capacity of up to 10 tonnes. Les Harrison Transport’s longest hiab truck can transport loads up to 20-metres in length. All their hiab drivers are trained, licensed and qualified to shift heavy loads and are proud to do so in a friendly and professional way. With the rise of containerisation, Les Harrison Transport grew its container and cargo transport services in Hamilton, Tauranga and Auckland with the inclusion of swinglift, flatdeck and skeletal truck and trailer units to move import and export containers along with structural steel and concrete. Devanning services were also developed as part of that expansion. As well, shipping container hire and sales services are offered out of Hamilton and Tauranga. “We move 300 to 400 containers a week and deliver for various timber and lumber companies in the building supplies market, plus move containers day and night at the port.” From depot to door, Les Harrison Transport provides freight and warehousing services for local businesses. Their fleet of curtain siders specialises in bulk palletised cartage and building material loads, with smaller trucks for home delivery by tail lift and trolley jack. Their office and warehouses operate Monday to Friday, 7am to 5pm with weekend and evening availability on request.
