Formed in 1995, OTEL has a wealth of knowledge and experience in the transport engineering industry. The company can tackle any sized job and can handle complete projects from the initial inquiry, through to sourcing the right sized chassis and crane, and will work with clients to design the truck body configuration for all types of application. OTEL specialises in the manufacture and fit-out of vehicles for the utilities and transport sectors, working with large and small publicly and privately owned companies who require truck bodies built to their specifications. They have built a strong reputation in the transport industry for working closely and constructively with their clients and delivering a top-class product at the end of the build process. “We build trucks that are unique to different industries, different companies, and even unique to different drivers,” says managing director Kane Metcalfe. “The OTEL design and build process always starts with our truck designers sitting down with the customer, the driver, or the end user to fully understand exactly how the truck will be used, what safety requirements they have, what tool boxes they use, what crane or attachments are needed, and what chassis will suit best.” OTEL is also the distribution agent in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands for the world-renowned Altec (USA) range of insulated truck-mounted aerial booms for Elevated Work Platforms (EWPs) or ‘Bucket Trucks’. Altec is a global provider of insulated EWP products to the utilities, tree care, telecommunications, and contractor markets. It has been committed to excellence since 1929 and constantly raises the bar through innovative product design, integrated safety features, and dedication to customer satisfaction. “Our relationship with Altec is seen as an essential partnership for growth in specialised vehicles, as we create solutions to meet the challenges our customers face and as we remain committed to total customer satisfaction in all aspects of our business.” As a member of the New Zealand Truck-Trailer Manufacturer’s Federation, (TTMF), OTEL stays up to date with the latest technological advancements and complies with current transport standards and regulations. OTEL is also very conscious of the move to more hybrid and fully electric vehicles on New Zealand roads and has therefore teamed up with a couple of suppliers to provide solutions for truck body builds on hybrid chassis and / or standard chassis, but with electrification of the crane or Altec insulated boom. Kane says the transport engineering industry is strong. “New Zealand is still a relatively young and growing country and has a lot of infrastructure to build, as well as potholes to repair. We make the trucks that support infrastructure development so going forward we do not see any reduction in demand. Our industry will remain strong and healthy for some time yet.”
