T T Sue Russell Senior designer at Auckland-based Material Creative, Lorraine O’Rourke says it is an absolute pleasure to work at an interior design company full of passion, positivity and a relentless drive to deliver their valued clients a bespoke and engaging work space environment to enjoy. The multi-award winning design studio has wrought a reputation built around an empowering relationship it establishes with clients from the first conversation; one that brings about rather wonderful outcomes. “We work very hard to have the depth of conversation with our clients to help us to best understand what their aspirations are. Sometimes, they won’t have firm ideas in place and this is where we take all the time needed to help them articulate their values and visions,” Lorraine says. This year, the quality of that engagement was recognised when Material Creative won the Interior Design ‘Workplace up to 1000m2’ Award for a bold, imaginative, stylish and very individual interior interpretation for client Tax Trader’s Auckland office suite. Nicola Taylor, Tax Traders’ co-CEO and founder, brought clear ideas to the table articulating how she wanted their work base to feel for clients and staff alike. This provided the team at Material Creative with broad, open-ended opportunities to explore spacial design, colour and material treatments and to have some fun! “They were really open to ideas. They had a history with Material Creative and they Talk to us about our Complimentary Lighting Design Service Get in touch fourthdimension.co.nz info@fourthdimension.co.nz 09 215 0603 wanted elements of unexpected design to feature throughout. The vision of a workplace within a design that reflected the feel of being in a boutique hotel setting was a key-driver,” Lorraine explains. With a brief very much ‘human centred’ in its philosophy, Material Creative seized the opportunity to celebrate the quirky, the innovative and the unexpected in a way that turned the traditional concepts of how work-spaces should be, on its head. The awards’ jury had much to say about the transformation, describing the project as ‘brave, bold and warm, representing a future-ready appraisal of workplace through the lens of residential design, offering an uplifting and playful work environment in what is, traditionally, a conservative profession.’ “This project had such a solid foundation underpinning what it would become. The Tax Trader team spent a lot of time with their team about what they wanted. A sense of community, a playful work place and flexible use of spaces were important themes developed in those early conversations.” Stand-out spaces the central semi-circular forum in the centre of the floor-space, providng a place where staff gather for training sessions and casual meets. The greater open plan area has an organic quality to it, changing from a more concentrated working intent at its West end to the entertainers kitchen and bar to the East end. Custom neon lighting forms celebrate the values of the business and add a playful feel to each space. Nicola Taylor says she’s delighted with the end result and the sense of joyfulness the team feel working in such a creative work environment. “I brought a strong imagination of what I wanted to see and feel and having worked with Material Creative before I knew their creative design processes would articulate this vision really well.” Nicola says, above all, she wanted to work with a partner who could understand Tax Traders’ DNA at a really deep level. And Nicola says she holds a strong commitment into the future to constantly be reimagining the space. “It is very much an organic ongoing process for me. I’m delighted with how Material Creative has captured what is so important to us in terms of valuing the quality of the work space for our team and for our clients to engage with us in.” Asked what her favourite spaces are, Nicola says the training area, affectionately named ‘The Circle’ by her colleagues is something very special. “I wanted this space to be a really engaging collaborative place for colleagues to learn, relax and interact in.” She credits Material Creative for the amazing colour wave that lifts the spirits and exudes positivity. “I could never have put that together.” Specialising in high-quality cabinetry and bespoke joinery for both commercial and residential spaces.
