80 | Webb Design and Build BUILDING Beach home showcases builder’s craftmanship T T Russell Fredric A striking element of the Whangamata home is its roof design that incorporates high windows in opposing monopitched roofs, allowing the sun to cast abundant interior light. Whangamata builder Aaron Webb admits to becoming emotionally connected to some homes built by his company, Webb Design and Build. “Sometimes, it’s hard to pack up the toolbox and leave the project when the job is complete. I feel a sense of ownership when there is so much involved through the design and build process.” Aaron’s statement is not only personal; it reflects the ethos of Webb Design and Build which is creating quality, bespoke homes in Coromandel with a well experienced team. One build in particular is a Whangamata beach home that especially resonated with his design aesthetic. The eye-catching house, a contemporary bach design, directly overlooks Hauturu Island from Pipi Road in the seaside hamlet and has direct beach access. A striking element is its roof design that incorporates high windows in opposing monopitched roofs, allowing the sun to cast abundant interior light complemented by shadow patterns throughout. Materials incorporated that are themselves key design elements comprise concrete panels, cedar and colour steel roofing. As a beach house, the indoor/outdoor flow was well considered and makes the most of sunlit days and evenings, maximising sea views from the generous hardwood decks. It has two outdoor areas on opposite sides of the main living area; one beachside, facing east and the other northwest, complemented with a large concrete fireplace. This area is where night-time entertaining takes precedence and is sheltered from afternoon onshore breezes. Despite its generous 280 square metres, the house appears very modest from the street because of its simple gable roof and plain cedar wall from this elevation which is a surprise element intrinsic to the clever design. “On arrival this is deceptive because when you walk to the eastern, or beachside elevation and see the opposing monopitches of the roof it takes your breath away. “The shape of the house is simple but effective and the home is also functional and in harmony with the surroundings.” “It’s a real privilege to work on projects of this scale. We’re excited for the next opportunity.” Aaron is a licensed draftsman, as well as a licensed building practitioner and a member of Certified Builders. Webb Design and Build has a team of nine experienced builders from around New Zealand who brought their skillset to Whangamata for the opportunity and lifestyle. “We are as busy as ever. We’ve got two to three years of new builds lined up already.” Webb Design and Build’s latest project is nearing completion, a high specification, three story home with stunning views of Whangamata Beach. The house incorporates significant electronics and automation to make it a smart home which includes the ability to control lighting and heating as well as to make the windows obscure or transparent electronically. “The detail lies in the complexity of the design, fixtures and fittings. Sourcing quality materials, such as the Turkish marble bath, it has been a technical but really enjoyable build.” “There is a lot of steel and engineering required and there have been some aspects of the design that needed to be resolved, plus it was very hard to get materials when we first started at the end of 2021.” “We feel very privileged to get the opportunity to build such an amazing home.” Providers of scaffolding & building construction services to Whangamata, Coromandel & Thames Valley.
