The Kaikohe community is eagerly anticipating the completion of the new multiuse sports facility at Lindvart Park. With the build undertaken by Canam, and with input from a range of local contractors, the project is currently halfway through, with the roof recently completed and the fitout underway. It was in early 2021 that Canam first collaborated with local architect ĀKAU, a company that aims to empower whānau and tamariki to shape their future and their community through creativity and design, to conceptualise the multi-use centre. Canam general manager Stephen Jones says the location of the facility posed a challenge in finding contractors who could turn the preliminary design into a consenting one. However, Canam stepped up to the task and engaged Team Architects, Cook Costello (a local Northland structural engineering company) and Vision Consulting (a local geotechnical company) to ensure the project stayed within budget and progressed smoothly. He says a major challenge was, considering that Lindvart Park rests on a flood plain, the site needed to be elevated one metre higher than existing levels. Canam devised a cost-effective solution using one-metre high ground beams, lifting the structure out of the ground and creating a stable foundation. The building’s design pays homage to Kaikohe’s rich cultural heritage, with a shaped canopy feature at the entrance, adorned with grooved plywood soffits at varying angles. Three rakau posts, symbolizing warrior spears, stand tall, representing the return of warriors from battle, a poignant reminder of the region’s history. The precast panels incorporate Maori designs, beautifully merging culture with functionality, thanks to Canam’s close collaboration with IES Construction, a local company known for its precast craftsmanship. Farrand Building, Ateck Steel Construction Company, Gasworks & Plumbing and Air Zone air conditioning and ventilation engineers are among the companies that are lending their expertise to construct the facility. The project has been made possible through funding from various schemes, thanks to the hard work of Scope Project Management and Kaikohe Districts & Sportsville. Scheduled for completion in February 2024, Stephen says the multiuse sport facility is set to become a sports lover’s haven, catering to Proudly supporting Canam Group & the Lindvart Park Sports Complex project Phone: 09 430 3123 or 0800 101 276
