Urban Edge Construction BUILDING West Auckland company Urban Edge Construction has established a reputation for its expertise in tackling some of the most complex renovation and reclad projects. “We do the hard jobs that others won’t do,” explains Matt Grinter who founded the company with his wife Karen in 2015. “We thrive on a challenge and making things work for the client to deliver what they want within their budget.” This passion for problem solving is evident in the company’s portfolio of projects. One recent undertaking in Laingholm exemplifies the complexity Urban Edge routinely handles. The project, which lasted a year and a half, involved replacing everything and even propping up the house to get a digger underneath. “It was a house that had undergone five renovations over the years, with no consents done, so we didn’t know what we would uncover. The place was leaking, and restrictions on boundary issues meant we had to rebuild the house as it sat to keep the same footprint. It was one of the hardest jobs we’ve ever had to do.” Urban Edge Construction works mainly in West Auckland and further afield depending on the project. It’s team of ten builders works across not just reclads and renovations but also new builds. With a particular focus on homes in challenging locations, the company has carved out a niche in areas such as Titirangi, known for difficult building sites. For example building a deck on a home that was dependent on getting a digger into the section, which saw Urban Edge Construction go through two neighbouring properties and the bush to get the digger in there before building on a 45-degree angle bank. Matt says that what sets Urban Edge apart is not just its willingness to take on difficult projects, but also its commitment to quality and innovation. “We like to try new products and keep up to date with what’s available in the industry,” says Matt. “For example we are currently working on an aluminium reclad project in Waitakere, using a cladding product we haven’t used before, and working on a heritage-listed bungalow in Mt Albert, which requires custom crafting of detailing on-site to match the existing home demonstrating our versatility in handling both historical and modern building techniques.” Matt’s background in heritage home restoration in Sydney, has formed the backbone of Urban Edge Construction’s skillset. “I would describe myself as a problem solver and enjoy coming up with new and innovative ways to achieve a great end result. My favourite part of any build is being able to stand back and see the end result as it is such a satisfying feeling,” he says. Karen supports the business undertaking the role of administration, tackling the accounts, marketing and business development which allows the company to tackle a wide range of projects with confidence.
