JRB Construction T T Karen Phelps BUILDING Business is busy on Waiheke Island for JRB Construction. “People here know what they want and everything is architecturally designed,” says company owner Jesse Rudolph. This sentiment encapsulates the unique challenges and opportunities that have propelled JRB Construction to become one of the most sought-after building companies on the picturesque island. Jesse, who has been living on Waiheke since 2004, founded JRB Construction in 2008. “I had a friend that was living here and came over to visit and didn’t leave,” he recalls. “I love the variety of work we can build here. Everything is architecturally designed and exciting to build.” Currently, the company is juggling three significant projects that showcase its versatility and expertise. The first is an extensive renovation involving a full gut and rebuild of a large home. “We’re extending all the bedrooms, pushing the floor plan out to around 300 square meters,” Jesse explains. “The home is being reclad, and we’re also adding a new swimming pool.” The second renovation project is equally ambitious, located in the village of Oneroa. “We’re lifting a 180 square metre house, putting in a basement and bedrooms, with a full renovation upstairs and a complete reclad.” Perhaps the most intriguing current project is a new build in Onetangi, designed around a pohutukawa tree. “The house wraps around the base of the tree, so it’s a really interesting build,” Jesse says. “It’s challenging, with an arborist on site to ensure we don’t disturb the roots too much as we build the house to preserve the tree.” The 150 square metre ‘tree home’ features a ground floor carport with an elevator lift shaft, taking residents up into the tree-surrounded living space. These projects exemplify the unique demands of building on Waiheke Island. “Steep sites are normal for the island,” says Jesse, highlighting the team’s expertise in navigating challenging terrains. JRB Construction has grown significantly since its inception, now employing a team of 15 skilled professionals. “We’ve trained all our staff,” Jesse proudly states, underscoring the company’s commitment to developing local talent and maintaining high standards of craftsmanship. The company’s success is built on a foundation of local experience and a deep understanding of the island’s unique building requirements. Your Business, Your Industry, Your News.
