Pragmatix REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Internationally experienced Auckland project management and consultancy firm Pragmatix has grown an impressive portfolio that reads like a who’s who of New Zealand companies and projects. Just a few of these are Air New Zealand, Kiwi Property, Stride Property, Foodstuffs, Order of St John, Fisher and Paykel Healthcare, Kmart, and Ruakura Superhub. The company celebrated 20 years in business in 2022. Co-director and chartered professional engineer Emma McDonald is one of three directors steering the company. Pragmatix aims to leave a legacy in communities by leading great projects that its directors and staff are proud of, Emma says. “All of our employees are very experienced and have mostly come out of either construction or design or architecture in large project environments, either from the client side or contractor side previously. Pragmatix’s role in leading a project includes managing multiple professionals of various disciplines, “looking out for our client” and helping the client define and achieve their objectives, with managing risk, cost and timelines being key to the whole process. Pragmatix also has a key role in leading high-performing teams and creating a collegial environment where all members of a project team can freely communicate, voice concerns and problem solve — factors that contribute to a successful outcome. Kmart’s massive new distribution centre, built at the Ruakura Superhub and opened September last year, was project managed by Pragmatix. Pragmatix co-director Tony Webb has worked in the construction industry and consulting for more than 30 years and led the Kmart project. “We supported Tainui Group Holdings as part of our ongoing involvement in the development of Ruakura Superhub. We initially helped them tender in a competitive situation to win the opportunity to secure Kmart as a tenant at Ruakura Superhub.” The superhub is a Tainui Group Holdings project of national significance and, at 490 hectares, is equivalent to the size of Auckland’s central business district. “Kmart went to the market with a request for different landlords to come to them with a proposal so they could choose the best location and the best overall proposal to locate their distribution centre, so we assisted Tainui in bidding for that. They were then successful.” “We then went on to design and deliver a bespoke 35,0000 square metre distribution centre for Kmart, which was for them to consolidate all of their North Island distribution into one location.” Situated on nine hectares, the new facility includes warehousing, distribution, storage, a container yard, and an office facility. Pragmatix’s involvement in both Tainui’s business proposal and project managing the construction of the distribution centre is a perfect example of the range of skills and expertise the company offers. Part of the Tainui proposal included Pragmatix managing a concept design and initial costings for Kmart. “The commercial offer was done by Tainui, but we helped them bring together all the construction aspects of that including the programming and getting a resource consent.” “We managed to deliver the project on time, under budget, and I would say exceeded everyone’s expectations. This is the biggest industrial project that we’ve been involved with. It was quite complex because there was a degree of automation that went into the building.” Pragmatix also has specific expertise in seismic remediation projects and project feasibility, and its team partners with industry experts to provide evidence-based decision making to deliver the client’s stated goals. Greenstar accreditation for projects means Pragmatix can also provide advice on the benefits of sustainable design, including pathway for New Zealand Green Building Council certification.
