Taupō District Council is proactively supporting sustainable growth in a number of ways, including upgrading the town’s water and wastewater network. This year, a major project is being carried out in stages along Lake Terrace to upgrade water mains and install a new main trunk sewer as part of the Council’s commitment to ensuring the town’s network keeps up with demand and future development. “Our district is growing and we want our infrastructure to grow along with it,” said Councillor Anna Park at a formal blessing ceremony in March that marked the start of this significant upgrade project. “In the coming years, we are going to see new subdivisions open up, bringing a much-needed boost to our district’s housing stock, and that is going to put added pressure on our infrastructure. “We cannot take a wait-and-see approach to this, we have to be proactive to make sure we have a safe, resilient water and wastewater network that can cope with the increased demand.” Since March, Fulton Hogan’s team has been hard at work. To date, around 1330 metres of piping has been installed. Project manager Peter van Niekerk says another 480 metres of sewer main has now been welded and is ready for installation. “We’re about to start work on the next phase of the project between the Napier Road and Mere Road,” he says. “We’re working closely with our events team to make sure there is as little disruption as possible to locals and visitors alike and would like to thank the community for their patience.” This current phase of work is expected to be completed in September, with full project completion on track for mid-December 2024. The water mains work is being carried out along Lake Terrace to eliminate any risk to drinking water while the wastewater main is being constructed, with water pipes also being renewed in neighbouring areas at the same time. The new sewer main – going in from Kara Place in Wharewaka to Kaimanawa Reserve near Rifle Range Road – is being installed to accommodate growth in the southern end of Taupō town and is designed to make the system more resilient. A gravity-feed system is being deployed as a simple and safe solution that is easier to install and maintain compared to a pumped system. As the project continues, the work is being done as quickly and safely as possible with traffic and water supply management plans in place. Regular updates and notifications are keeping the community informed. Meanwhile, in April, the Council celebrated the Taupō Wastewater Treatment Plant’s 50th anniversary, which itself has been upgraded over time to manage growth. The plant handles all the wastewater from Taupō, Nukuhau and the Jarden Mile area as far south as Waitahanui with an average daily flow of 6000 cubic metres. As waste enters the plant, it goes into sedimentation tanks, and solids are separated and sent to digester tanks. “We like to think we have it down to a fine art as from those 6000 cubic metres, we are left with about one cubic metre of solids that cannot be treated,” observes Three Waters Manager Kevin Sears.
