T T to page 44 REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Located just five minutes from Ngaruawahia, in North Waikato, AFFCO Horotiu has been a cornerstone of the regional economy and New Zealand’s beef processing industry for more than a century. One of AFFCO’s original processing plants first established in 1916, the Horotiu plant is the largest capacity beef plant in the AFFCO Group with an annual beef kill of up to 150,000 and the ability to process up to 100,000 bobby calves during its season from July to September. With a full-time equivalent workforce of 550 processing workers, AFFCO Horotiu is the lifeblood of the region; one that relies on ‘the works’ for employment, trade services engagement and farming support; while the nation can rely on it for its significant export contribution. AFFCO Horotiu is a single-species beef plant and is a fully approved halal slaughter facility, registered for over 80 export markets including the EU, Middle East, North America and Asia. AFFCO is a 100 per cent New Zealand-owned company as part of the Talley’s Group and produces a full range of beef cuts and offal processing, along with a tallow rendering plant, blood and bone meal products and hides processing.
