CONTRACTING The history of Bay of Plenty based heavy machinery hire business Hewletts Road Machinery stems back to 1983 Geoff Phillips first operated a mechanical repairs business. This activity morphed into buying, selling and leasing forklifts until, in 2010 son Mason Phillips became involved, moving away from focussing on forklifts to supplying heavy machinery equipment for land and civil works developments. “Dad and I always liked heavy equipment and I wasn’t so keen on forklifts so when the opportunity presented we shifted in this new direction and we haven’t really looked back,” Mason says. Such was demand for the fleet of machines the business hires that the company has outgrown its original premises in Hewletts Road, with an additional machinery yard based in Poplar Lane, Papamoa. This works well in terms of servicing clients south of Papamoa, through Te Puke and surrounds. For Mason, it’s very satisfying to see the business growing year on year since shifting its focus and with the amount of land and civil development the region is experiencing the outlook into the future is very positive. He says, key to it’s success has been great relationships forged with long-term clients who know they will get reliable, well-serviced machinery to lease. “The motto myself and the team work toward is to deliver good gear and great service. Our clients want to know that the equipment they require is available when they need it and is reliable.” Hewletts Road Machinery has an extensive behind the scenes team of mechanics, a hydraulic hose doctor, air-conditioning specialist and engineers. “We also undertake rebuilds and when they are at their end of life we sell them. We’re very in-tune with what is going on in the district and ensure we have what the sector needs.” The selection of equipment available for hire is comprehensive, including excavators from 5 tonne to 50 tonne, loaders from 3 tonne to 23 tonne as well as rollers, bulldozers, graders, dump trucks, water trucks and a large selection of attachments, including augers, claw buckets, rippers and screening buckets. Mason says he and his father are happy with the size and scale of the business and don’t want to take any significant further development steps. “I think we’re at a good size in terms of the range of gear , the clients we have, the sectors we service. To grow any bigger in scale would demand new systems and structures and we’re delivering to our clients already a great product.” Currently the company employs a team of 10, across its various activities, including transporter drivers. The Bay of Plenty is a region promising plenty of land and civil development as the region welcomes more and more people and businesses into its quarter. “It’s certainly a busy region which is great to be a part of. We’re proud of the fact that we have so many repeat customers who know the quality of gear and service they will receive from us consistently.” NZ's preferred machine control system Unicontrol machine control hardware empowers earthmoving companies to achieve unparalleled precision in their operations.
