T T Kelly Deeks Fostering the new breed T T Sue Russell BO & CO Electrical CONTRACTING Morrinsville Plumbing & Gas As consumers become more aware of decarbonisation and their demand for sustainable solutions grows, BO and CO Electrical in Cambridge has a growing solar division offering attractive options for installation and maintenance on residential and commercial properties. Solar installation and maintenance has been a key focus for BO and CO since its inception in 2019 by electrician Sam and Hayley Bryant. The couple brought an honest and hardworking approach to the local market place, providing outstanding personable service and high quality results as they sought to exceed their customers’ expectations. Sam takes great pride in his work and applies a level of attention to detail that results in a high standard of electrical solutions. His high standard of workmanship was flagged by Harrisons Solar and BO and CO was soon asked to operate as a subcontracted mobile solar expert for Cambridge. Sam set up a dedicated solar installation team which is now completing a growing number of solar installations thorughout the Waikato each week. He says solar systems have continued to improve in performance since 2019 while their cost has reduced. “You can now get a bigger sized product for your money, and with the Registered Master Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers, Morrinsville Plumbing & Gas offers customers, across residential, commercial, farming and industrial, a comprehensive range of services. Owner/director Dave Strong says with 44+ years’ experience working across a large-footprint, from home base in Morrinsville, to up North, through the greater Waikato, Auckland, Gisborne, Opotiki and even in the Islands, the team has accrued a huge level of understanding on what’s important to operate successfully in the industry. “Customers want a timely response when the phone call comes in and they want to know that the work is of a very professional standard. Our team are trained to a high level across all disciplines, and they understand the values that drive this business,” Dave says. Five apprentices are engaged through Masterlink, a company owned and operated by Master Plumbers. As the only NZ-owned mentored apprenticeship programme, delivered nationwide, Masterlink bridges the gap between Plumbing business and those seeking to learn the trades. Established in 2002, Masterlink aims to promote and increase the number of people training in the industry and new green loan product being offered by the banks also making solar more accessible for more households, the market has recently propelled forward quite significantly,” he says. “New Zealand as a whole is more aware now of the benefits of solar, including lower power bills and carbon footprints, and higher values for properties with solar panels. Combine that with the increasing cost of electricity and we are now doing solar installations for people of all walks of life, not only the greenies or the wealthy. If people have a spare $15,000 to $40,000 or if they get that green loan, rather than doing up their kitchen they will install a solar system and start getting a return on their investment straight away. That is a huge driver.” BO and CO is committed to providing the best service and advice about the right new solar solution for each individual home or business, with the solar expertise to ensure systems are well designed with all the right equipment to capture the most sunlight and reduce those power bills as much as possible. BO and CO’s solar speciality also puts the company right where it’s needed to provide the full scope of electrical services for new builds and renovations as well as commercial jobs. Including of course, solar panel maintenance to ensure each customer gets the best returns for their solar investment. increase the number of businesses involved in training. Dave says he feels improvements could be made to delivery of the training at this time. “Certainly, the structure of training has changed since my day but I’m very encouraging of anyone who would like to get involved in these trades because it can open up into a really worthwhile career long term.” Apprentice Maria Contreras Huerta received the top Plumbing World Scholarship award at the recent Master Plumbers National awards night and she has also received a nomination for “Apprentice Excellence Award” at the upcoming NAWIC awards night. “This is great for all involved, Maria, for what she has put into her career, Morrinsville Plumbing & Gas, for training Maria and preparing her for the future and Masterlink for guidance and assistance to both Maria and Morrinsville Plumbing, a little like the old saying ‘it takes a village to raise a child’, it’s same with apprentices.” Morrinsville Plumbing & Gas provides plumbing, gas fitting, drain laying, fume cupboards, sheet-metal work and backflow prevention services. For Dave and the team, the most important thing is to deliver quality service and this is their priority.
