80 | Bildon Timber system proving its worth Bildon Timber Fascia Specialists T T Hugh de lacy TIMBER INDUSTRY The Bildon Timber catch-line says it all - “Timber Fascia, No Rust, No Sweat” – and that’s what the Tauranga company is offering: a timber fascia system based on its own designed and manufactured fixing bracket, the Bildon 2000. It’s a steel bracket fascia system designed to be used exclusively with the Bildon 2000 fascia board. The product has its foot in the door of a huge fascia market currently dominated by colour-steel products, brackets and fascia alike, while Bildon Timber is alone in offering timber palings pre-painted in whatever colour the client wants. That means that once the fascia is up and the scaffolding removed, nothing further has to be done to it. The brackets are different too, being made from a zinc-aluminium (ZAM) mix that’s virtually impervious to rust. “It’s the only timber fascia system, and we use brackets that are fixed internally and fully concealed, so there are no rust-prone nails going through your timber fascia,” Bildon Timber owner Stu McCellan says. The fascia brackets are fixed to the rafters, and stainless steel soakers are attached to any joins in the fascia, eliminating unsightly mitres and joins while creating a fully-sealed weathertight fascia solution. Bildon Timber supplies the complete kit of brackets and painted palings from its Tauranga base to anywhere in the country, and most of the custom since the system came on the market in 2000 – hence the Bildon 2000 product name – has come by word of mouth. “We’ve never done much in the way of promotion but we’ve been selling Bildon all round the country, although mainly in the North Island: we’ve got a job in Waikanae next week and we were in Mangawhai a couple of weeks ago,” he says. “The system is particularly good in coastal situations because there’s no danger of the brackets rusting, and we use stainless steel fittings.” The timber is an engineered pine supplied by Te Puke firm Pukepine, and is painted and sorted into lots at the Bildon company’s warehouse, a former orchard packhouse with space to keep all timber stocks under cover. Stu acquired the company nine years ago and, with little or no promotion, it has grown to where he now employs two full-time staff, plus four contractors to do the installations. Most of the installation work, which includes spouting and downpipes, is done by Stu’s teams of contractors, but some clients are happy to do the installation themselves. The rainwater systems Bildon Timber supplies with its fascia kits come in a variety of spouting profiles and are sourced from top-quality manufacturers using mainly ColorCote and Coloursteel with various choices of bracket systems. The Bildon solution is suitable for any roofing system, and is more durable and longer-lasting than other fascia products while having the further advantage of requiring little maintenance. “A further virtue is its sustainability, with timber being a renewable and environmentally positive option,” Stu says. Bildon has a five-step installation process starting with planning, then going on to quoting, scheduling, installation and follow-up.
