84 | Scaling up in Auckland Agents of Architecture take on projects of any scale from an addition or alteration, through to multi-unit complexes. Agents of Architecture T T Virginia Wright ARCHITECTURE When David Klosser and Selena Sager set up their company Agents of Architecture in September 2023 they had already worked together over several years and two companies. David registered as an architect in 2007 while Selena studied architecture in the United States before moving to New Zealand and licensing as a Design 3 LBP (Licensed Building Practitioner). She was running the architectural side of a design and build company when David brought her into the architectural team he managed. “We’ve both done a lot of work with residential additions and alterations, but that company worked on a lot of existing buildings that had weathertightness issues and other defects. They were often large-scale projects involving multi-unit residential apartments, so Selena’s technical skills were a real strength which led me to believe she’d be a good running mate to form a company with,” he says” When the subsequent company they were working for decided to move out of architecture and go back to their commercial interior foundation, they encouraged David and Selena to set up their own practice with the projects they’d brought in, as well as contracting back to them for any projects they were completing, explains David. “They also suggested we take some of the staff we’d been working with so we started with one of those staff members coming across and employed another two due to the amount of work we had on.” They took a while to come up with their name Agents of Architecture, knowing that they wanted a name that was transferable, and that other people could feel part of. “That culture of ownership of work by everyone is important to us and we wanted our staff to have a sense of ownership of the company as well,” says David. As they come up to their first anniversary David describes Agents of Architecture as “a small company with the capability to do the same work that bigger companies can do.” From the start they’ve concentrated on establishing their own systems and processes that can be scaled up as needed. David’s background includes eight years working with a large multi-disciplinary building consultancy company building up their architectural team. Among the other things he learnt while managing different projects concurrently without losing sight of individual clients was a healthy respect for risk management and the implications that poor workmanship can have for a project. The flip side was the deep understanding of what a good team looks like that is capable of achieving a really successful project. Agents of Architecture pride themselves on their client focus with open communication and transparency at its heart. Their experience is multidimensional and includes an understanding of how corporate strategy translates into internal office fit-outs designed for optimum workplace health, safety and wellbeing. Along with architecture and design they’re steeped in technical expertise with exceptional knowledge around compliance of all heights and complexities of buildings. “It means that the level of documentation we put together is very thorough and covers off what a builder needs to do on site. We’re rigorous to cover off all the difficult details and we’re not leaving those open to be addressed when the builder gets that far,” explains David. Based in Auckland’s CBD they take on projects of any scale from an addition or alteration, through to multi-unit complexes. They look forward to having an opportunity to put their internal systems, processes, skills and experience to work on much larger projects up to and including of a civic scale.
