With over two decades of experience, including time in London, Kate brings a unique perspective to her projects. Her Auckland-based studio specialises in new homes, renovations, and distinctive residential interiors across the country. Kate’s approach emphasises creating an enriching experience for clients, understanding the complexities of the building process from their viewpoint. Two recent projects highlight Milieu Architecture’s expertise in balancing aesthetics and functionality. One standout project is a two-level family home in Beach Haven, featured in the December/January 2024 issue of HOME magazine. This residence, built by Patrick LeComte of Villa Masters, replaces a 1960s home and features sharp geometries and a cantilevered upper level over a deep plunge pool. “The project involved building a visually striking, coastal-themed residence which paired with an existing salon on site.” The 270 sq. metre home includes four bedrooms, with the master bedroom opening onto a balcony deck. The upper level is designed for privacy, with separate zones for adults and teenagers, while the ground floor offers a guest room, double garage, and living areas with beach reserve views. The adults’ wing features a master bedroom with a luxurious ensuite, complete with a bath, shower, and infrared sauna, offering beach views from the bath says Kate. “The geometric design and dual-level structure give the house a dynamic, contemporary look while it has a relaxed coastal feel,” says Kate. All blending seamlessly with the re-clad existing salon on the property. Another notable project from Milieu Architecture + Design is the Rothesay Bay House on the North Shore. A family home completed in 2020 in collaboration with DC Builders Ltd. This 230 sq. metre three-bedroom home across two levels, cleverly utilises its limited section to maximise outdoor space and provide sea views and boat storage. The family with two young girls, are keen on sailing and wanted separate storage for two small sailboats, so we split the boat storage from the garage and then bridged the house across the space between them,” says Kate. “Originally the owners thought to pop the house across the front of the section and put the garden at the rear. But I flipped the house design around and put the garden to the side and wrapped the house around it.” The interior design emphasise light, sunny living areas highlighted by its light oak flooring and featured birch plywood interior. The master bedroom, positioned to capture the best sea views, opens onto a balcony, while a flexi room mezzanine space above the kitchen can serve various purposes. “This was one where the clients were worried that internal spaces would be a bit small, but then when it was finished, they were like - “Oh, they’re all just right,” says Kate. Whether it’s a new build or a renovation, Milieu Architecture + Design ensures a joyous and stress-free building journey that sets her apart in the architectural landscape.
