| 19 REGIONAL NZ Steel The new furnace, which cuts Glenbrook’s greenhouse gas emissions by more than 45%, is also a significant boost for New Zealand’s low carbon aspirations. IMG’s Hydraulics Division was engaged by New Zealand Steel to lush approximately 2.7 km of installed piping and tubing within the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) hydraulic system. Following fabrication, hydraulic piping and tubing must be thoroughly cleaned to remove metal particles and other contaminants before the system can be commissioned. A high-velocity oil lush uses the movement of luid through the pipework to create turbulent low, dislodging contaminants from internal surfaces and helping protect critical hydraulic components such as servo valves and variable displacement piston pumps. Large hydraulic systems require high low rates to generate the turbulent conditions needed to e ectively clean the internal pipework. To achieve this, IMG utilised its mobile, containerised lushing unit, capable of delivering up to 550 L/min, providing the low capacity required for the scale of the project. The hydraulic system was compartmentalised and lushed section by section to allow progress to be carefully managed and monitored. Throughout the process, specialist diagnostic equipment was used to monitor key operating conditions, while high-capacity iltration systems removed contaminants from the luid. Regular luid sampling was undertaken to con irm cleanliness levels and ensure the required standards were achieved. After nearly 14 days of continuous operation, supported by both day and night shift teams, the target cleanliness level was achieved across the entire hydraulic system.
