T T Kim Newth Builder Reece Fortune says it’s pretty special to work in a place like Northland, with its relaxed way of life and beautiful beaches. He and wife Danielle launched their building business there, Boaz Developments, five years ago, based out of Lang’s Beach. “We love it up here and it’s a great place for our young family,” says Reece. “We’re only 500-metres from the beach - we live down there in summer. We’re close to Mangawhai too, where we do a lot of work.” Reece started out a boat builder and was eight years in that trade before deciding he was ready for a change. He then stepped into construction, starting his building career in 2015. Reece is proud to say he’s now the third generation in his family to take up the tools. Prior to launching Boaz Developments in 2021, he’d been working as a project manager for a friend, who then shut up shop to move to Australia. “At that time, I had no intention of going out on my own. I had just started building our own place around that time so I thought Id take a few months off to concentrate on that. Then another mate came to me with a job and I was also asked to help on a couple of others. It kept snowballing to the point that it made sense to start our own business.” He and Danielle planned it out together, with Danielle heavily involved in setting up the administrative side. Their passion for the local community underpins their vision to provide detailed and disciplined building services for homes and businesses across Northland, with no corners cut. “We pride ourselves on excellence and being as transparent and honest as we can.” Boaz Developments today employs a young, fast local crew of eight builders, including three apprentices. “They’re amazing, especially our first year apprentice who is a bit of a wizard! What we care about most is attitude.” Whether it’s a new home build, renovation, extension or a commercial fit-out, Boaz Developments offers a clear process - with no budget or timeline surprises - and well-crafted results. With in-house drafting also part of the service, clients can complete the full design and build with Boaz. Notable projects include a hospitality fitout for Bennetts Bakery in Mangawhai in 2024 that involved constructing a purpose-built bakery and café space from the ground up. It features custom timber-slatted joinery, polished concrete floors, bold branded interior walls and a modern retail counter layout. At Mangawhai Heads, Boaz Developments has recently delivered an incredible outdoor build. The team designed and built a free-standing covered pavilion over a full timber deck, a plunge pool wrapped in glass, a centrepiece in-situ concrete fireplace and an outdoor kitchen and bar. A new design and build project coming up for the team is at Parkview Waters, a boutique gated community in Mangawhai. It’s for a new 229sqm, single-level, four-bedroom home with attached double garage. “It’s a nice traditional weatherboard home in a prime location.
