48 | REGIONAL Hopper Construction Coastal expertise to the fore Hopper Construction has been a key contractor on three landmark canal waterway developments: Pauanui Waterways, Whitianga Waterways and, above, Marsden Cove. T T Russell Fredric “Our real niche expertise is coastal lifestyle property developments and waterways. That’s experience gained over more than 30 years of building them.” Building world-class coastal lifestyle developments has given Hopper Construction a specialist skill set that now underpins everything from major subdivisions to complex civil infrastructure projects. For more than 30 years, Orewa-based Hopper Construction has specialised in residential subdivisions, canal developments, wastewater infrastructure and civil construction. The business employs about 45 people and is led by chief executive Dan Hopper, managing director Guy Jones, and a wider senior management team with around 100 years of combined industry experience. Hopper Construction undertakes bulk earthworks, drainage, wastewater treatment plants, stormwater systems and complete civil construction packages. It is increasingly applying its expertise to projects for external developers, councils and commercial clients, while continuing to support the family businesses Hopper Developments and Hopper Living. Dan Hopper says the three businesses complement each other while serving different markets. Hopper Developments creates coastal residential communities, Hopper Living develops retirement villages, and Hopper Construction delivers the civil works, while increasingly undertaking projects for external clients. “We’re working near 100% externally now. We still do work for the family and, when the market returns, we’ll continue to do work for them, but we want people to know we don’t just work for Hopper Developments; we work for other people as well.” Projects begin with tender engagement, before geotechnical planning, erosion and sediment controls, and construction staging. Hopper Construction remains involved through earthworks, civil works, testing and quality assurance, before handing completed sites back to clients. “We do everything ourselves, bar things like kerbing and asphalt sealing of the roads. We endeavour to build everything else ourselves, from complex wastewater treatment plants to stormwater management systems. “Our real niche expertise is coastal lifestyle property developments and waterways. That’s experience gained over more than 30 years of building them.” Hopper Construction has been a key contractor on three landmark canal waterway developments: Pauanui Waterways, Whitianga Waterways and Marsden Cove Canals. Together, they have established the company as one of New Zealand’s most experienced contractors in complex canal and marina construction, requiring specialist capabilities in dewatering, erosion protection and marine earthworks. Another recent project, for an Australian based company, is Ara Hills, an 84-hectare master-planned residential development about three kilometres from Orewa village. Hopper Construction is delivering the bulk earthworks for one stage of the development, where technically demanding ground conditions are driving the programme. Construction began earlier this year and has already involved moving about 40,000 cubic metres of earth, with another 95,000 cubic metres programmed over the coming season. The ridgeline site includes deep gullies requiring substantial filling, complex retaining structures, ground stabilisation using lime and cement, and robust erosion and sediment controls. Those measures protect surrounding native bush, streams and wildlife while meeting stringent geotechnical requirements. “It’s a very complex site.” While waterfront developments remain a defining strength, Hopper Construction’s workload extends well beyond subdivisions. The company also undertakes stormwater upgrades for councils, emergency Three Waters maintenance, commercial site works, car parks and infrastructure projects throughout Auckland, Northland and the Coromandel. “I’m extremely proud to have the last name that I have. What we’ve built over the years has been pretty remarkable, but it’s a company built on integrity and reputation. “We’re known for producing a quality product, built to a very high standard for all our clients, and we’re all extremely proud of that.” MULCHING | PILE DRIVING | RETAINING WALLS | DRILLING | STMS EARTHWORKS | DEWATERING | DRAINAGE | ROADING Email: INFO@HOPPERCONSTRUCTION.CO.NZ Phone: 09426 5010 P.O BOX 50803 Building the North from Whangarei to Auckland With a local team and depot based in One Tree Point, we’re well established to service projects throughout Northland, while our Auckland sta and depot in Dairy Flat cover the greater Auckland region.
