T T Karen Phelps Family-owned Eastern Bay of Plenty civil contractor Draintech has been recognised for its commitment to developing skilled workers, being named a finalist in the Connexis Civil Industry Training & Development Awards in the category for businesses with an annual turnover of up to $10 million. Managing Director Franz Carter says investing in people has always been at the heart of the business. “Training is our social responsibility and a way of giving back to the community that supports our business,” says Franz. “By investing in our people and their personal development, we create a stronger business and also give our staff the opportunity to build better futures for themselves and their whānau.” Draintech employs 15 staff, including nine local Māori who make up 60 per cent of its workforce. Seven of those employees have completed or are currently undertaking Level 3 or Level 4 qualifications and more than half of the company’s total workforce has either completed qualifications or is currently training while employed by the business. Franz says the company’s commitment to training enables it to deliver projects beyond what might typically be expected of a contractor of its size. “Because we’re absolutely stacked with talent within our crews, with an exceptionally high level of trade qualifications that investment in our people means we can confidently take on large-scale and complex projects and maintain high standards of quality and safety. We’re the go-to experts in the industry who really know our stuff. “Whether it’s a simple fix or a super complex system design, our team bring the same top-notch skills and a commitment to getting things done right first time.” The company’s workplace culture is another factor highlighted in its award nomination, with an emphasis on creating opportunities for employees to build long-term careers without leaving the region. “Keeping skilled people in the Eastern Bay of Plenty is important for our community and our local economy,” says Franz. “When people can develop rewarding careers close to home, it benefits not only our business but also their families and the wider region. Additionally, our ethos transfers to heightened business resilience resulting in staff retention and consistent year on year performance.” Draintech specialises in wastewater, stormwater and water reticulation, dewatering and a wide range of civil construction services. We own all the plant and equipment required to get the job done efficiently and safely. This includes specialised kit such as dewatering pumps and spears, trench shields, rock breakers and top-of-the-line service location equipment. Innovation is a key aspect that sets us apart from other civil contractors in our region,” says Franz. Draintech works for a diverse client base that spans major industrial operations, commercial developers and local councils. Its portfolio includes projects for the Whakatane Mill, Kawerau paper processing plants and Fonterra’s milk processing facility, subdivision developments and local infrastructure projects throughout the Eastern Bay of Plenty. Supported by specialised equipment and more than 30 years of experience in three waters infrastructure, the company has successfully completed contracts valued at more than $2.5 million and developed a reputation for solving challenging engineering problems. “Draintech isn’t just another drainage company,” says Franz. “We specialise in all aspects of civil construction and industrial work. Whether it’s a straightforward repair or a highly complex installation, our team has the skills, experience and equipment to deliver the right outcome.”
