T T Karen Phelps “Intelligent transport systems bring together the technology used to manage and monitor roads including equipment such as traffic lights, radar, number plate recognition systems, CCTV and electronic signage.” With infrastructure projects becoming increasingly dependent on technology, from electronic speed signs to CCTV, fibre optic networks and sophisticated traffic monitoring Armitage Group’s intelligent transport systems (ITS) division is now the largest part of its business with projects spanning major state highways and other critical infrastructure throughout New Zealand. “Intelligent transport systems bring together the technology used to manage and monitor roads including equipment such as traffic lights, radar, number plate recognition systems, CCTV and electronic signage,” says Managing Director Zachary Lawrence-Sansbury. “We are currently working on a number of large ITS projects including now delivering more of the minor civil works ourselves, which means we can offer clients a more comprehensive solution in-house.” One current project is the State Highway 2 Hawkes Bay Expressway, where Armitage Group is helping the head contractor Downer deliver the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) project. Its intelligent transport systems work includes installing variable message signs, steel gantries, power and ducting, fibre optic cable, CCTV and inductive loops. Armitage Group is undertaking similar work on the O Mahurangi – Penlink project in Whangaparaoa for Fulton Hogan and HEB Construction and is also preparing to deliver an intelligent transport system solution for the Second Ashburton Bridge. The company is also delivering Intersection Speed Zones nationally for NZTA. “In rural areas where a busy side road meets a state highway, the system temporarily reduces traffic on the main highway to a safer speed when vehicles are approaching the intersection,” says Zachary. Armitage Group designs and installs a system including electronic speed signs on the highway, along with sensors embedded in the road and roadside radar. These detect approaching vehicles and trigger the system, allowing traffic speeds to be reduced when required. Recently completed work includes the NZTA national State Highway Schools Programme, which involved installing electronic and static speed signs around state highway schools throughout New Zealand. Delivered within a tight timeframe, the project included minor civil works, sign installation and traffic management. Armitage Group also holds the national ITS maintenance contract for NZTA, providing an ongoing role beyond initial installation. With multiple divisions — transport, fire, security, monitoring and surveillance — Armitage Group has comprehensive capabilities. The fire division is completing a large manufacturing and treatment plant in the Upper Waikato and is commencing work on another supermarket and the security division has been involved in upgrade works on Auckland Harbour Bridge as part of the Auckland System Management Alliance. Zachary says the breadth of the business is underpinned by its family ownership and long-serving workforce. His father, Paul Sansbury, founded the company in 1994, and many employees have remained with the business for decades. “We are proud of being a family business, but what that really gives us is continuity of knowledge and relationships,” says Zachary. The company is an NZTA 1A prequalified contractor and holds ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certifications. With more than 50 personnel across New Zealand and operations extending into Australia, Zachary says Armitage Group continues to grow. “Our focus is not simply on delivering the technology and walking away. We want to deliver it properly, maintain it and build relationships that last.”
