With offices in Kaitaia and Whangarei they’re an eight-strong team with projects all over the country as far south as Oamaru, as well as Wellington, Palmerston North, and Clevedon to name just a few. When Alan, an architectural designer and experienced carpenter, started the company, it specialised in design and build projects. Ten years later as he was joined by his sons it switched to design only while also moving into residential development. “That’s why our clients come to us,” says Trent, “because our designs draw on a wealth of practical building and development experience.” Local projects often come their way because prospective clients have seen an Arcline house they like the look of, and they’ve got a well-earned reputation for knowing about costs and timeframes and for knowing how to design to a client’s budget, Trent says. “We’ve seen a lot of other firms’ plans get thrown in the bin because they’re overdesigned, so they come in way above budget and get scrapped. Because we’ve been using our own money to do this kind of thing we know how to hit a budget and so we can get a client’s project on budget from the start.” Recent clients came to them for help to evaluate two sections they were looking at in Riverhead where a single lane road led to a cluster of houses. On site, as soon as they heard about the house being envisaged, with a sixth sense built up over years of experience and numerous projects, the Arcline Team knew which section would best suit. Flanked by the Riverhead forest on one side and sloping down to a stream, it had an obvious, naturally elevated, building platform big enough for what they had in mind with both privacy and views. A timely Archipro meet and greet evening allowed Trent to show them a variety of products which fed into the concept, and the design proper began after another site visit to discuss the brief. “They’re a young family with two young children of their own and extended family living overseas. They wanted a whole separate wing with a second master suite and enough room so that visiting family could enjoy an extended stay without feeling like they’re living on top of each other.” With five bedrooms and seven bathrooms in total the resulting house has spacious suites at either end of the house with a central pavilion big enough for expansive living between them: a media room, a games area with a pool table, and indoor outdoor flow opening onto to an extensive outdoor living area with a swimming pool, and at one end a small additional wing with a gym looking out to the forest. “It’s a big house with complexity and we were genuinely impressed with Hayes Builders and all their subbies. Instead of all the questions we often get in the initial phase of the build the first photo we got from Sam Hayes (the foreman) was literally the house already framed up and ready for the roof. Yes, our plans are very detailed, but they just knew what to do,” says Trent. The look continues with the equally low- maintenance clip fix, watertight, tray roof system combined with generous eaves. The clients are not only happy to be comfortably living in their spacious, modern, rural home, but thanks to the experienced team behind it they were able to enjoy the journey to get there. Well-designed and beautifully finished the family can relax into the house’s various rooms for years to come with plenty of space for everyone.
