Based in Remuera, Kamermans Architects is a well-established, award winning NZIA practice offering a full service approach on residential and commercial projects in Auckland and beyond. Owner and Director Marina Leenman first joined the studio as a newly qualified university graduate some 12 years ago before subsequently taking over the reins from founder Frans Kamermans on his retirement in 2022. “From the start, I knew the practice had something so special because of the way Frans had built client relationships and the office culture,” says Marina. “We have a base of clients who come back to us again and again because they love working with us.” Five years ago, Marina’s sister and fellow designer Juliana Budel joined her at Kamermans Architects. Their flair for close collaboration extends to a loyal team of consultants from structural engineers to building contractors to bring every unique vision to life. As a full service practice, Kamermans Architects steers projects all the way through from first conversation to detailed design for building consent and construction, procurement, and contract oversight. “In fact, we often go even further. For example, we’ve done projects where we’ve designed the furniture as well as detailed selections in the kitchens and bathrooms. We can go as far as the client wants us to go. The benefit of that is we maintain the same high standard quality on every detail. As we work through the process of detailed design, the architectural concept is refined. We ensure that the result is a very cohesive finished product.” Kamermans Architects is primarily Auckland based but works with clients in other places too, such as Nelson and Queenstown. Sustainability is a core consideration on every project for this practice. As Marina explains, fundamental to their thinking is that a building should be designed to age gracefully in terms of how it looks and functions. Careful consideration is given to form and orientation on site to ensure homes are designed to stay at a comfortable temperature without mechanical heating/cooling. “It’s about creating a pleasant home that naturally heats and cools itself using the sun’s energy and natural ventilation. We also look at orientation and roof angle to allow low winter sun to come in, while excluding high summer sun so spaces won’t overheat.” Memorable projects for the practice include Queenstown’s ‘Wings Over Water’. Completed in 2022, this striking four-bedroom, waterside home with butterfly roof enjoys incredible mountain views and has a design that embodies the sustainability ethos throughout, from triple glazing to a conservatory that doubles as a thermal engine. Kamermans Architects has completed other high spec, high sustainability homes in Nelson, Auckland and Mangawhai Heads and is currently designing a beautiful new home in Ōpōtiki as well as several impactful alterations and renovations. Rather than having a signature style, the practice works with the client, their brief and with the site to develop optimal outcomes incorporating passive design principles. “Passive design has its own geometry of angled roofing and angled soffit and we are continuing to evolve that geometry as we respond to every unique brief, client and site.”
