Scott McIlroy, of the Hazlett Agri-Supplies team, has been working with mid-Canterbury training farm Coleridge Downs, providing all seed and chemical supplies as well as budgeting, planning, and monitoring crops with farm management software Agworld. “The kale and rape crops performed really well last year – we grow feed over their budget and this helped them buy more stock, to get better returns,” Scott says. “There are more than 70 paddocks which I monitor weekly, and when it became apparent we were going to outgrow our winter feed budget, Coleridge Downs had the opportunity to buy some more cattle.” Favourable weather contributed to the crops’ success, but so did their weed-free, bug-free status. “If I can keep them clean of bugs and weeds, they have every opportunity to grow to their full potential, regardless of the weather conditions.” Scott advised planting a fusion mix of kale and plantain together. “Once the kale has been grazed away, you’re left with a paddock of plantain at the end, and some good quality tucker.” The Agri-Supplies team at Hazlett is made up of vastly experienced agri-merchandising specialists who work hard to understand what each client is doing on their farm and how best to achieve the results they are looking for.
