| 67 Three generations in the seed business The Kubala family: Pat and Margaret started Kubala Seeds over forty years ago and their legacy continues on through Peter, Aaron and Zara. RURAL SERVICES » Kubala Seeds F or more than 50 years the Kubala name has been closely linked with arable farming and seed preparation throughout Southland. Established by Pat Kubala, the business originally focused solely on seed dressing of small seeds, notably Crested Dogstail for which there was huge export demand. Today the business is owned by Peter Kubala supported by his son Aaron, with his wife Sue handling administration and helping Peter with front line customer enquiries. With three generations in the seed business Kubala Seeds is a family business that cares which delivers continuity and professional service to the farmers in Southland and Otago. Peter has enjoyed developing strong relationships with farmers, agronomists and seed wholesalers over the years. The seed industry has come a long way with the development of new varieties of seed cultivars, endophytes and the likes of clean crop brassica, he says. “It’s amazing what the plant breeders have achieved.” Seed retailing has also become a very competi- tive business. “I pride myself in sourcing and supplying good quality seed and customer service.” “During the past three years there has been an increase in small seed production the region which has increased seed dressing demand.” Last year Kubala Seeds processed about 200 tonnes of small seeds, but Peter estimates this will increase to 300 tonnes this year.
