| 81 Moving dirt in Mosgiel family’s DNA Hollands Excavation recently invested in a large eco-mulcher, makes short work of hedges, gorse and scrub. Kelly Deeks A fter 19 years in business, Andrew, Sarah, and Carl Hollands, of Mosgiel’s Hollands Excava- tion, still love moving dirt, completing multiple projects at any one time for farmers, developers, councils, and construction companies with passion and pride. Starting out in 2002 with one excavator and one truck, Hollands Excavation has grown to seven staff and four excavators, a grader, a roller, and three six-wheel trucks, trailers, and silage bins. “Our policy is to keep reinvesting into our compa- ny and updating our machinery, so our clients know they have the latest technology to accomplish their projects,” Sarah says. “We recently invested in a large eco mulcher which attaches to our 20 tonne and 15 tonne excavators. Awesome for removal of large or small trees, hedges, gorse, and scrub, this attachment is massive cost saving to our client and a better alternative for our environment. “We recently used it to remove a macrocarpa hedge which was about 40 years old, and our client was extremely happy. It saved him time and money, minimising cartage and tip fees and making fast removal of the hedge.” Catering to a variety of projects, Hollands Excava- tion runs a range of attachments to complement its machines, such as 100mm to 900mm diameter augers, rock/concrete breaker, and post driver. The company has also invested in GPS Machine Control, which Sarah says is a game changer for both Hollands Excavation and its clients. “Our machines can operate up to 40% more efficiently with a vast increase in accuracy and volume of work completed per day, to an extremely high standard, allowing us to get through our workload quickly and efficiently. Our clients love it, their projects are completed with significant cost reductions.” RURAL SERVICES » NZ Fencing Solutions / Hollands Excavation New fence design for conservation • from page 80 in weight, hole placement, and coating,” Duncan says. “They weigh 2.04kg/m which is the heaviest weight available, and are made using Q235 steel, which is important, as there are a lot of Y posts being sold now using higher tensile steel which fail under pressure.” New Zealand Fencing Solutions’ steel T irons are manufactured for difficult rocky ground conditions, where wooden posts are not practical. Used in place of intermediate posts and strainers, T irons are a good option in fire risk environments, and the instal- lation cost of T irons compared to wooden posts is significantly lower, making these a very competi- tively priced option while creating a stronger, longer lasting fence. New Zealand Fencing Solutions now has a product for the fast-growing conservation fencing market. “We have designed a conservation fence that uses galvanized Y posts and T irons, which are stamped so they can either have netting with extra wires above and below resulting in a higher than normal fence, or they can be driven in further and the fence will be closer to a standard height.” Duncan says there are numerous advantages to using this type of fence rather than a conventional fence, including the ability to build a quality fence without having to doze a fence line which reduces the environmental impact of the fence. “There is also a hugely reduced labour com- ponent, as this type of fence is a lot faster to build than a conventional sheep-proof conservation fence. Because the fence is all steel apart from the end strainers, the risk of damage from fire is hugely reduced. This type of fence is ideal for any fence line that is difficult to access, but is a very viable option on any terrain.” New Zealand Fencing Solutions exhibited a range of products at the South Island Agricultural Field Days in Kirwee in March. Andrew, Sarah, and Carl bring different avenues of knowledge and experience to the management of Hollands Excavation, as well as diverse ideas. Their valuable, essential staff, are exceptional at what they do, and they take pride in their work and in Hollands Excavation. “It takes a great team to make a great company and without everyone working well together, we wouldn’t be where we are today,” Sarah says. “It is very important to us that each and every team member feels they are valued and are happy in their work environment, which equates to the work performance being exceptional and happy clients.” Andrew and Carl operate machinery on a day- to-day basis, so they’re a constant familiar face to clients, as well as the other two excavator operators Brad and Chris. Andrew and Carl’s father Ron also drives trucks for Hollands Excavation. Andrew, Sarah, and Carl really appreciate their suppliers and mechanics, being aware of how dif- ficult supply is becoming in New Zealand, but these awesome folk go out of their way to keep Hollands Excavation’s machines serviced and operational. Sarah says farmers are the backbone of our great country and are really down to earth folk. “We enjoy being out on the farm working for them. Being based in such a small farming commu- nity we often see our clients, and it’s always great to catch up. For our farming customers we do a range of farm work including ditching, earthworks, dairy lanes, dairy shed excavation, and effluent ponds.” “For our farming customers we do a range of farm work including ditching, earthworks, dairy lanes, dairy shed excavation, and effluent ponds.” Bridgestone Tyre Centre Looking for tyres and tyre repair services in Dunedin?
