32 | Penvose presents Kim Newth Established in 1965, Otago’s Penvose Angus has a fine tradition of breeding elite cows and bulls and is proud to be an AngusPure Partner Stud. Keen interest is anticipated at the stud’s 37th annual bull sale at Wedderburn on May 21st. As the highest altitude stud in New Zealand, Penvose Angus is renowned for producing animals that can thrive in tough conditions, with superior shifting ability. Spanning some 2000ha, the cattle farm is also home to 6500 breeding ewes and red deer. “Our cows are run in our hill country and have to be able to get back in calf and rear a calf unassisted,” observes fourth generation Otago farmer Stuart Duncan, whose father Graeme founded the stud. “We can experience long harsh winters here; bulls are bred to withstand these conditions and can shift anywhere in the country.” The Penvose Angus annual sale leads out the rising two-year-old bull sales season for 2022. Last year’s sales season was very successful and favoured top quality, balanced genetics. Some outstanding sale results were recorded, with the Angus breed repositioned as the premium beef breed in the country. Penvose achieved a very good average of $7300 and a top price of $15,500. “The black cattle market is certainly very popular right now. There are additional benefits for clients buying bulls from an AngusPure Partner Stud like ours that use the finest genetics and best management practice to help farmers produce more premium quality Angus beef. “We were very happy with last year’s sale. This May we want to present even more young bulls to give people more options. We’ll be sorting them for the sale in March and sending out the catalogue to our existing clients, as well as putting it online MEAT & WOOL » Penvose Angus on our Facebook page. We have a very good client base that we have worked with for a long time and on top of that we get new enquiries all the time.” Some 35 to 40 top quality young bulls will be presented, all performance recorded on the TransTasman Angus Cattle Evaluation (TACE) programme that uses Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) to guide Angus breeders and buyers. All bulls presented for the sale are vet inspected. From the Penvose Angus stud, buyers can expect young bulls of all round soundness, phenotype and a balanced data set with an emphasis on Intramuscular Fat (IMF) and growth. Top AI sires from the United States and Australia are driving stock quality and world class genetics at Penvose Angus. The stud also continually looks within New Zealand for bulls to fit their breeding programme. “It is fairly straightforward now to go online and find the best in the world when you’re sourcing genetics. We had a big AI programme this year and that will continue to drive up quality into the future. We’re always looking for improvement and the quality of the stock just keeps going higher and higher. This year’s young bulls are looking great. Growing conditions have been fantastic so they have put on a lot of bulk.” As was the case last year, the upcoming May sale at Wedderburn will be hosted by the bidr platform as a hybrid auction, with online bidding as well as the usual on-farm format. The sale is expected to attract buyers from across Southland and Central Otago through to Canterbury. In addition to running the farm, Stuart and wife Lorraine have had a busy summer with their popular accommodation operation, Wedderburn Cottages on the Otago Central Rail Trail. Even though the Australian market was absent due to Covid, Stuart says bookings were still very good. Penvose Angus Stud’s Stuart Duncan: “Bulls are bred to withstand these (harsh) conditions and can shift anywhere in the country.” Next on Farm Auction January 2023
