Working directly with growers and merchants for over forty years, Bayer NZ is a leading supplier of innovative agrochemical products for the control of weeds and diseases a ecting New Zealand’s arable and agricultural industries. As New Zealand’s farming has evolved so too has Bayer’s Crop Science division and a team of ield technicians have the responsibility of testing the e icacy of new products as they become available. David Parker is one of Bayer’s six Regional Business Managers operating throughout New Zealand. David’s key role is to introduce merchants and growers to Bayer Crop Science’s expanded range of fungicides and weed control products. For David, whose territory stretches from Ashburton to Kaikoura and over to the West Coast, helping farmers maximise the genetic potential of their crops through a comprehensive crop rotation programme is at the heart of his work. Gaining incremental improvements in yield and quality is not just about controlling disease, says David. “It’s also about understanding plant physiology and integrating modern products and techniques to achieve this. Traditionally our products have been based around cropping, whether that’s cereals or small seeds and feeding animals with fodder crops. In the last ten years fodder beat has become a major crop for farmers because they can grow a large amount of dry matter in a small area. Diseases are becoming more prevalent, particularly Septoria which has become an issue in the last few years for wheat growers. In barley some of the key diseases that we’re controlling really are yield robbers. But by applying the right product at the right time you can maximise the potential for the crop.” David says the modern farming approach is to proactively implement a control plan and build the yield platform by utilising sprays at appropriate growth stages of the crop, rather than waiting for a problem to occur. “Weed control is becoming a challenge where we’re getting resistance to certain post emergence herbicides. Sometimes, if it’s a real problem it may involve putting a plan in place involving crop rotations and using di erent chemical groups in a timely manner. We now have a new product called Sakura, which is another pre-emergence herbicide for use in wheat (not durum wheat) and triticale and assists with herbicide resistance to other chemical groups. Firebird is a pre-emergence herbicide that controls a wide range of key arable weeds in both wheat and barley. That’s a big product for arable farmers now and much of the autumn crop that is planted would be treated with Firebird.” While Bayer NZ works with both merchants and growers to maximise the lifecycle of Bayer’s products and the genetic potential of each crop, all products are provided directly to the merchants like Luisetti Seeds. “Luisetti is one of our founding customers,” says David. “We support Luisetti Reps in the ield, and provide product training in terms of the products’ key attributes, where and how to use them.” Bayer’s successful operation in New Zealand is about having the right products that it the market, along with having the right people and an emphasis on supporting the merchants in the ield.
