Sue Russell Back in 2019, Ranfurly Transport took a significant step in its growth and development when it bought McLaren Transport in a 50:50 Joint Venture with HWR Group. “It meant we grew from 5 trucks to a fleet now of 23 trucks and gave us significant more capability to extend our services and markets. Richard and I went into partnership with HWR and we are now a significant operator with trucks on the road all over New Zealand,” says Rachel Duffy. Today, Ranfurly Transport has almost completed rebranding all its trucks with a distinctive bright orange with white detailing look, heralding in this new era. As General Manager, Rachel manages the dayto-day aspects of the business, while Richard, a Managing Director is still actively engaged in driving and has overview of all the trucks, ensuring they’re up to speed and maintained in top condition. “This fleet is our livelihood and that of our valued drivers, so we place a great deal of importance on ensuring they are maintained to the highest possible standard,” Rachel says. Transporting stock all over New Zealand is the main-stay, along with hauling bulk fertiliser, hay and wool locally. Ranfurly Transport owns five fertiliser spreaders. It also has an onsite concrete batching plant and delivers concrete all around the Maniototo. Rachel and Richard are always on the look-out for more drivers, particularly experienced ones, however they are geared up to train entry-level drivers through the HWR Group driver-training programme. Rachel holds strong opinions on how the industry needs to change in order to attract more drivers. “It needs to be viewed as a trade, and recognised as a professional qualification, something of real value you can build a career on. When you think that our staff are operating trucks valued at $800,000, it starts to put the need for this recognition into light.” Rachel started two young men who did not have their driver’s licence and the firm funded and supported them through to a Class 5 licence. “We need to look at finding passionate people to professionalise the sector and make it attractive, giving it the recognition it deserves.” Rachel, an ex school teacher, is trying to make headway into schools as well, to talk to students about looking at driving as a serious career which can take them places. Adding to the efficiencies on board, Richard and Rachel have just employed a new Stock Dispatcher and a Bulk Dispatcher; significant roles with responsibilities that impact the overall operation of the company. “It means we can be assured the depot is operating as efficiently as possible.” Ranfurly Transport is a leading trucking business in the Otago region. It’s positioned itself well, with solid clients and demand for their services. 03 444 9194 | Stu: 021 224 2320 s.l.duncan@xtra.co.nz Proud to support Ranfurly Transport Ltd RANFURLY TRANSPORT USE VINCENT HOLDINGS FOR ALL THEIR AUTOMOTIVE PAINT, PANEL WORK, UPHOLSTERY & SIGNAGE NEEDS HELICOPTERS, BOATS, TRUCKS & CARS · Service the North and South Island in our fully equipped workshops · Manufacturers of Aluminium Stock Crates Proud to support Ranfurly Transport Ltd S T O C K C R A T E S FEILDING TIMARU Ph06 323 3629 • • Blair (South Island) 027 690 0724 Brodie (North Island) 021 0294 1293 Ph 03 688 2274 STONEHENGE Call Andrew 0272478308 | 03 444 7066 | stonehengestation@gmail.com ll | | i il Merino, Half-bred & Suffolk Rams, for private viewing and sale.
