Business Rural Autumn 2023

102 | Growing presence in the forestry market Company owner Mike Renner. Kelly Deeks Proudly servicing the fencing needs of Marlborough’s rural communities for more than 50 years, Renner Fencing is moving with the market and now completing more industrial and security fencing than ever before. “We’ve been a rural business since the word go,” says company owner Mike Renner. “We love it and we will always do it, but the world is changing and we’ve got to change with it.” As an FCANZ accredited fencer, Mike and Renner Fencing offer services to the residential, commercial, industrial, and rural sectors. The firm has traditionally done about 60% rural fencing, but today it accounts for about 40%. These jobs include sheep yards, cattle yards, high country fencing, netting for sheep and deer, wire and electric fencing, all stock fencing, and dam fencing. Recently Renner Fencing has been growing its presence in the forestry market, installing fences around pine tree blocks. “For quality fencing you need quality products, but more importantly you need quality contractors. We advise our clients on the best products to suit their project, so they get the long life out of their fence that they would expect. Our fences endure the test of time and maintain their strength, just like our business.” Helping to smooth the transition into the commercial world is project management software system Tradify, which Mike uses to quote, order, schedule, and invoice every job, linking up with Xero and with all the details available for staff to oversee and tweak where necessary. “There are multiple people to deal with on commercial fencing projects and a lot more quoting to do. I’ve got everything on the computer in front of me and it saves a lot of time.” Construction is booming in Marlborough and currently includes some particularly large scale projects, including the new Waitohi Picton Ferry RURAL SERVICES » Renner Fencing Contractors Terminal Redevelopment which Renner Fencing is pricing, and some upgrades at Marlborough Airport in Blenheim where Renner Fencing is installing more than four kilometres of new security fencing. To facilitate this and future large scale projects, Renner Fencing has recently bought its own digger and auger set, and has held a training day for all staff to get their Wheels, Tracks, and Forklift endorsements. Vineyard development is still going strong in Marlborough, as the big vineyards get bigger, and neighbouring farmers now having to pay the same rates as the vineyards start to enter the wine industry with their own small operations. “The wine merchants are doing their job,” Mike says. “We are developing vineyards for more than four months of the year.” Renner Fencing specialises in vineyard development services such as strainers, stays, intermediates, laterals, and wire running, and has built vineyard trellis systems all across Marlborough. Meanwhile the post suppliers are battling it out in the vineyard development market with their different products, and Mike says they all have their place in the market, and their own strengths and weaknesses. Renner Fencing puts in three main products for vineyard fencing, namely steel, timber, and an emerging line of plastic posts which now has a manufacturing facility under construction in Marlborough.
