42 | MEAT & WOOL » Monymusk Herefords Sale and a great line-up of speakers Kelly Deeks Keeping competitive in this tough bull sales market, Monymusk Polled Herefords has a new initiative to attract and encourage interested breeders to an open day on farm at the bull shed on Wednesday April 30 at 2pm, with its annual line up of 38 sale bulls available for inspection and a great line-up of speakers adding huge value to this big day out in the Te Anau Basin. Monymusk Herefords owner Chris Douglas says open days have been held in the South before with little success due to the distances required to travel. He hopes his great line up of bulls and speakers, followed by a barbecue and refreshments will provide some additional value out of the day and draw more interested breeders and farmers. “We’ve got three companies coming to speak who are all a huge part of our operations,” he says. ANZCO Foods will give a presentation on its premium, natural, grass-fed, antibiotic-free prime beef market, a non-breed specific brand commanding good premiums. The team from Resolution Farm Management digital toolbox will give an update on new initiatives and answer any questions from current users and potential new clients. Founded by Chris’ son Henry and partners, Resolution Farm Management has grown considerably and is now well utilised by hundreds of farmers across New Zealand and several countries overseas. “Resolution is a great tool, and we couldn’t do without it in this modern age of farming.” Catalyst Performance Agronomy will talk about winter crops and their management to get optimum yields. Catalyst Performance Agronomy is a mid-Canterbury firm with a strong foothold in Southland. Chris says they have young, enthusiastic, and highly qualified staff who work side-by-side with farmers in the field and deliver tailored agronomy advice for great commercial results. The results of a fodder beet crop and a precision-grown swede crop at Monymusk Herefords will be discussed. This open day precedes Monymusk Herefords’ 38th annual on-farm bull sale on Wednesday May 28 at 11am, where 38 bulls will be for sale via auction in conjunction with bidr. Last year’s sale had a good result, especially considering the difficult farming year. The top priced bull went to Glenbrae Herefords for a national top price of $22,000, helping to lift the average sale price up $500 on the previous year. “We had an awesome line-up of bulls last year, but we think this year’s are even better,” Chris says. “They are very even with good performance data.” Chris, wife Jayne, Henry, wife Ally, and Chris and Jayne’s daughter Amanda are passionate about their Herefords and pride themselves on the type of cattle they produce. “Thick, deep, good boned cattle with plenty of meat and fat cover are our trademark,” he says. There are multiple reasons to run Herefords, including their docility fertility, feed efficiency, survivability, longevity, and meat quality. When crossed with Angus, Herefords add bone and growth, and the resulting hybrid vigor is a powerful tool. “It is not often we get something for nothing, but the resulting cross will give an increase of up to 15% in weight gain from birth. This added gain allows cattle finish faster and also adds value to the crossed heifers, which are well sought after for breeding. “First cross cattle are attracting premiums all over the country as buyers realise the gain out-performs any Angus premiums, which are now are now very limited.” Enquiries welcome.
