Tamar Farm was started in 2002 after the Wrights had worked their way to farm ownership through contract milking, sharemilking, and equity partnerships. Their closed herd of about 300 cows has been selectively bred from the best cows available, with semen imported from the UK. “We are breeding for flavour,” Richard says. “We use ultra scanning for intramuscular fat and eye muscle area to ensure the highest quality product.” Richard originally hails from Devon, England and his predilection for his native breed stems not only from their shared heritage, but also for the Red Devon’s strengths as both a beef breed and a dairy breed, and even as a docile, resilient, low input lifestyle breed. The Red Devon is an ancient breed first introduced to New Zealand in 1838 by James Busby. Initially used in bullock teams, their docility and intelligence made them a drover’s favourite.
