54 | A reliable partner for agricultural contracting Services include forage harvesting, mow, rake and bale hay and silage, drying crops off, bale wrapping and stacking, loading and transportation. Bernadette Cooney A&M Wilson Contracting Ltd, based in Southland has established itself as a trusted provider of baleage and silage services to the region’s dairy farmers. Family owned and operated by Adam and Mel Wilson, the company has grown since its inception three years ago, evolving into a reliable partner for agricultural contracting services. Adam purchased a segment of Russell Jack Contracting three years ago, launching A&M Wilson Contracting as his own independent enterprise. Having worked in agricultural contracting for over a decade, Adam saw an opportunity to build something substantial and has since expanded the company’s operations. “This is our third season here now, so within our three seasons we’ve more than doubled our fleet. When we started, we had four tractors and two balers. Now, we run a fleet of ten tractors, three balers, and a forage harvester,” says Adam. Servicing the entirety of Northern Southland to as far south as Fortrose, A&M Wilson Contracting core services are silage and baleage contracting for the dairy farming sector. Services include forage harvesting, mow, rake and bale hay and silage, drying crops off, bale wrapping and stacking, loading and transportation. “We also buy and sell baleage and silage for trading,” says Adam, creating a business model where they both produce and supply feed for farmers. “We probably bale and chop as much for our clients as we trade ourselves,” he says highlighting the company’s role in supporting the region’s feed supply chain. Additionally, A&M Wilson Contracting has recently ventured into leasing farmland, securing 1,500 hectares with the intention of wintering over approximately 3,000 cows on behalf of larger dairy holdings.
