| 83 An exciting milestone for Roughan Holdings The Rutbuster in action. Bernadette Cooney RURAL SERVICES » Roughan Holdings Ltd RHL is a family owned and operated contracting company, specialising in farm development and maintenance, including irrigation installations, dairy conversions and waterway development and maintenance. Last July, Roughan Holdings Ltd (RHL) bought W.A. Boyes Contracting, a well-established Darfield-based contracting business founded by Wayne “Brickie” Boyes in 2001. The acquisition marked an exciting milestone for RHL, helping expand its fleet and resources. “Wayne and Trudy had built a solid business over 20 plus years, and were ready for retirement, so when the opportunity arose to buy the business, it was a natural fit for us,” says Dan Roughan who set up his company in 2022. “It has allowed us to scale up quickly by investing in our own equipment. Eliminating any need to lease heavy machinery.” RHL is headquartered in Darfield, where Dan lives with his life and business partner, Grace Allan and their two children. They offer a comprehensive range of services, with around 60-65% of its work catering to the rural sector across Selwyn, North Canterbury and Central Otago where they run a satellite enterprise. “We’re all about farm development and maintenance, including irrigation installation, water races, pond construction, and river protection. General excavation, dairy conversions, land clearing, drainage, road construction including forestry roads, general cartage and emergency response works,” says Dan. The remaining 40 % of their workload is commercial construction, residential excavation, subdivisions and public works for local and regional councils. Dan has a career spanning almost 20 years, having worked his way up from a labourer to an operator, foreman, and senior management before achieving his goal of business ownership. As a member of Civil Contractors NZ, Dan and his team uphold the highest standards in civil works and infrastructure projects. One of the company’s latest notable projects has been its extensive work at Flock Hill Station in the Craigieburn Valley. The station, which includes working farm and exclusive high-end luxury lodge, built seven new villas near its restaurant and RHL were subcontracted to deliver comprehensive excavation, road development, and land clearing following a scrub fire. “We managed everything outdoors - excavation, roadworks and drainage,” says Dan. “Including clearing up and cutting new fence tracks for fencing contractors following a large fire at the station. Overall, this was a massive job, and we had a team of 10-12 on-site throughout its peak,” he says. Another major project was the water main replacement at the Fonterra milk plant in Darfield. A worsening leak threatened to shut down the factory, prompting RHL to execute a complex horizontal drilling operation to replace the main without disrupting factory operations. “We managed everything outdoors - excavation, roadworks and drainage,” says Dan. “Including clearing up and cutting new fence tracks for fencing contractors following a large fire at the station.” General Excavation | Earthworks Roading | Land Clearing | Demo Siteworks | Farm & Forestry Tracks Subdivisions | Cartage & Transport 027 535 5935 | dan@rhltd.co.nz Darfield, Christchurch, New Zealand www.rhlcontracting.co.nz Contaminated material cartage & disposal Gravel and aggregate supplies & delivery www.mcewanhaulage.co.nz Nic McEwan 027 630 1607 McEwan Haulage are proud to support Roughan Holdings Ltd “We had to keep the factory running, so we threaded a new line and did all the live hookups within a 12-hour timeframe, and we successfully managed to keep the feed live, test it, chlorinate it and hand it over within deadline.” Through its dedicated team of 14 - including operators, ground crew and admin - RHL is well-positioned for continued civil contracting success.
