RURAL SERVICES » Rural Building Solutions Ltd sales.canterbury@thinkwater.co.nz Nigel’s concerned about how the void for dairy shed builders will be filled and is concerned that some operators will come into the district who don’t understand all that goes into planning, consenting, building, and commissioning a dairy shed. “The consent process has, of course, become increasingly complex and unless pro-actively managed, can be quite costly to farmers, and cause significant delays. RBS has dedicated staff experienced in working with all the South Island councils, who understand and anticipate the information and questions the various councils will have. This means we have the ability to estimate and manage consent costs and duration for our clients with a high degree of accuracy. It is just one aspect of the overall project management service we provide.” “We also work with a fantastic team of subcontractors, who understand our expectations around meeting timeframes. We have long term relationships with these subbies and therefore we really know how each other works. This means our projects suffer none of the disjointed communication that can be common in the construction industry.” Asked about current projects Nigel says the year has got off to a good start, with work on a herd home sheltering barn in Dunsandel and a new 54 bail rotary shed in Darfield. Another project on the go is a feed pad in Temuka for a repeat client where a rotary shed was built last year. This involves working in with and expanding on existing infrastructure on the farm. “As is often the case, our client appreciated our ability to offer a staged approach, where we will incorporate existing feed facilities, rather than start from scratch. We do this with yard and shed extensions as well. What works best is coming up with a joint plan, based on the client’s long-term view of their farm. This lets us break things into stages and make sure each step is compatible with and future-proofs the next step. “ Nigel says the best outcome is achieved when there is a working partnership based on trust. “When clients entrust us with their vision of the future, and feel that they can trust our advice, things always work well.” Our many repeat clients are proof of this partnership approach. So, with a busy year ahead, extending well into 2026, Nigel says he and the team have already rolled their sleeves up and are just getting on doing what they love doing and do well.
