Karen Phelps RURAL SERVICES » WE Perrin Ltd W E Perrin must be doing something right. 2025 marks its 62nd year in business. “Our clients are pretty loyal down here. Some of them have been with us since we started with subsequent family members using us as the farm has passed down the generations,” says manager Bill Perrin. Based in Owaka-based, he says W E Perrin has forged its reputation on prompt service and it is that which has kept farmers coming back for generations. Currently owned by Gary Wynyard, who also owns Wynyard Transport in Milton, Perrins has maintained its name and family connection. Perrins has a long history. Bill’s father Eddie purchased the company in 1963 and relocated the business to a 10-acre property at 24 Royal Terrace in Owaka, where it still operates today. Bill’s brother Alistair joined the company in 1970 at the age of 18 as a driver, gradually moving into management as the business expanded. His dedication over more than 50 years was instrumental in shaping the company into what it is today with Gary taking the company forward into the future. Perrin’s services include carting livestock, lime, metal, fertiliser and wool. The company’s fleet includes stock and fertiliser trucks, bulk units and spreaders, offering a full service to farmers. Recent investments include two new trucks added around Christmas. General servicing is done in-house at the Wynyard depot in Milton. No job is too big or small for Perrins and it maintains smaller vehicles as well. Covering mainly the South Otago region, the association with Wynyards can give stock transportation reach into the North Island when required. While Bill says the past year saw a slight slowdown in the fertiliser side of the business due to lamb prices and cautious investment from farmers, recent increases in meat prices have created a positive shift in the market. This changing tide has brought renewed activity for Perrins, signaling promising times ahead for both the company and the rural community, he says. “Loyalty and building relationships, that’s what it’s all about,” explains Bill. “We really value our customers. They’ve been good to us and we’ve been good to them. We rely on them and they rely on us. It’s a win-win so any improvement for their businesses flows on to our business.” He says the company is also dedicated to its workforce, a team of eight that includes Bill’s son Blake and nephew Blair, who drive stock and bulk units. “Our drivers and office staff are our front line, along with the stock agents Perrins has dealt with over the years. They are loyal and we have formed lifelong friendships,” says Bill. He acknowledges the strong relationship between Perrins and the local community with Perrins taking pride in donating to and supporting many local groups and clubs. “They support us and we support them back. That’s what happens in small communities,” says Bill. COOKTRANSPORT (HYDE) For All Your Cartage Requirements Owaka’s Cartage Specialist W.E.
