Russell Fredric The adaptability of Baz Janssen Building has proven a successful strategy that continues to ensure a steady workflow of rural and urban projects. “We have been very busy,” owner Baz Janssen says. “As of now we have a lot of feed pads to get through, and on the building side we’ve been doing a lot of workshops, calf sheds and pole sheds which has been great.” The business is based in Winton, Central Southland, and employs a staff with diverse skills covering many aspects of construction, both commercial and residential, concrete placing and engineering including fabricating steel, structural frames and pipework for yards and sheds, along with general engineering services and machinery maintenance. This versatility is highlighted by Baz Janssen Building’s ability to complete anything from bespoke new houses to dairy and wintering sheds through to effluent ponds, with an aptitude for craftsmanship and precision, a trait that has been commented on by clients, Baz says. Last year Baz Janssen Building completed a large commercial project, providing the concrete floor and piling for a storage facility in Invercargill. The facility comprises 350 individual units, with the steel-structured building completed by another company. “That was a really neat project, something a little bit different. It’s not in the rural community but it’s what we do; it’s a lot of concrete work and site preparation. The building itself is 3,500 square metres.” Because of the site being on reclaimed estuary land, 680 six metre deep piles were required to meet the load bearing requirements for the floor. The amount site preparation work the company does across its projects means this is a forte of Baz Janssen Building; it has a small fleet of machinery RURAL SERVICES » Baz Janssen Building Ltd and trucks which further adds to its versatility and efficiency. Baz and his wife Teresa own a 120 hectare, 400 cow dairy farm, so Baz is well and truly in his element when it comes to rural work such as the feed pads and the nuances of each situation. Baz and his team innovated a concrete nib profile for feed pads and wintering barn floors which is moulded off-site and this prefabrication creates efficiencies which can be vital for time-critical builds. “It’s got a nice curve at the top and a radius at the bottom where the silage sits against so it’s not in a corner. It works awesome.” Last year’s extremely challenging winter and protracted spring has prompted some farmers to look at their options for reducing feed wastage and to consider having a feed pad built. They had it tough there for a long time.” “Quality is really big for us and because of the background I have with the farming I do understand what they are trying to achieve. A big enjoyment I actually get is catching up with them and I can relate with them and understand first-hand.” “I do like that side of it where you come up with a solution and provide a product that’s going to be beneficial to them.”
