That’s still our benchmark.” The society’s management committee comprises 47 members who meet monthly, supported by an additional 100 to 150 volunteers around show time. Aside from two part-time contractors handling secretarial and treasury duties, the entire operation is run by volunteers. “We are incredibly lucky,” says Jodi. “Volunteers aren’t too hard to find because it’s such a positive event to be part of. But we do have an ageing committee, so we’re putting the call out now for more helpers to get involved with set-up, packdown and support on the day.” The 2026 programme promises the full breadth of rural competition and creativity. From traditional livestock, grain and field roots classes to home produce, flowers, baking and preserves, it reflects the diversity of the Mackenzie district. There are special sections for children, teenagers and people with disabilities, alongside fiercely contested open categories. Trade sites and sponsors remain a key part of the experience, with strong backing from local businesses and major support for the student art, craft and hobby sections. Jodi says that the Country Kidz Agricultural Skills and Cadet Fencing competition will again encourage teamwork among local schools. Wearable arts, upcycling and creative photography classes showcase modern interpretations of rural life. Affiliated with the Royal Agricultural Society of New Zealand, the show continues to promote excellence in agriculture, horticulture and rural enterprise as well as nurturing youth development and judge training, says Jodi. “We’re encouraging innovation, education and excellence across the rural sector. That’s what keeps the show relevant and thriving.” As always judging will culminate in the Grand Parade, a highlight that Jodi says brings the entire showground together. “Easter Monday in Fairlie is a celebration of who we are as a community. If we can welcome record crowds, showcase outstanding entries and see new volunteers step forward, then the 128th will truly be our biggest and best yet.”
