The company, started by Turihaua Angus, sells its product through Gis- borne’s Village Butchery and Turihaua Angus owner Paul Williams says there has been a silver lining out of the economic shakedown. Online beef orders and local delivery have been popular opening up a new aspect to the business. Support has been exceptional and sales have remained steady with three to four carcasses being processed a week,” he says. Diamond Beef is also looking to supply Neigh- bourhood Pizzeria, which will be an essential piece of the puzzle allowing the business to shift bigger volumes of secondary cuts. “Looking to the future we are aiming to use the services of Mobile Beef Packers, an MPI audited portable abattoir. This will be a game changer and allow us to slaughter and process all beef and lamb on farm, reducing our costs and improving the quality of the product. It’s the way of the future,” he says. Diamond Beef has its own stock truck and re- frigerated container and until now all animals have been toll processed in Hastings. Paul says using a mobile abattoir and processing on farm, which was trialled in November, will have many benefits. “It is much lower stress on the animals resulting in higher quality meat. It will also gives us access to other parts of the animal the processor normally keeps. Our butcher said he has never worked with such high quality beef before. He says starting Diamond Beef has allowed them to take control of their product from farm to plate. It also fits in well with consumer demand to know where their food has come from and to buy local. • to page 46 Based in Gisborne, ABC Limited are licenced Draftsmen and carpenters who can take care of your design and building needs.
