34 | Overcoming hurdles in the Central Plateau Carlos Segura intends to breed a ock that can cope with Mananui Station’s increasingly hot and humid summers. Virginia Wright RURAL PEOPLE » Tuatahi Farming Partnership Carlos Segura manages one of four blocks that together make up the 6350 hectares of Tuatahi Farming Limited Partnership on the Central Plateau. In the past his block, Mananui Station, has been purely a nishing block with all their replacements coming from Moerangi, another of the Tuatahi blocks. More recently Mananui Station has changed its approach in response to a particularly bad outbreak of facial eczema. Moerangi and the other blocks being at a higher altitude than Mananui makes them less susceptible to the disease which is a problem for Mananui. “It’s a horrible disease,” says Carlos, “their faces peel off and then their hooves, we had to do something.” He intends to breed a ock that can cope with Mananui Station’s increasingly hot and humid summers which make them particularly susceptible to the disease. “We’re transitioning from our composite terminal ock to a facial ecsma (fe) resistant ock,” says Carlos. “So we have to start breeding our own replacements from a Romani ram which we put over our better white-faced ewes.” The Romani rams come from the farm next door which is one of the reasons that Carlos is con dent that their progeny will thrive and perform well. “You’re pretty much buying a sheep that’s being reared on the farm, in the same environment, so it’s not like you’re buying a sheep that’s been bred in the Waikato,” he explains. Not being in a position to simply buy thousands of fe resistant ewes outright Carlos started the transition with the purchase of 70 of the Romani rams, each going to around 100 ewes.
