48 | Semen rights to bull sell for record $55,000 Jake Stokman with a calf. Stokman Angus holds its annual yearling sale in September. Karen Phelps An outstanding Stokman Angus bull has been so in demand that the owners have managed to sell the Australian semen rights of Stokman Solution S329 for a record-breaking price of $55,000 to Mandayen Limousin and Angus Stud in Brinkley, South Australia. Jake Stokman says the previous record for a New Zealand Angus yearling bull was $28,000 so Stokman Angus has almost doubled that while keeping the bull. “There was a lot of interest in New Zealand and Australia to buy the bull. When Mandayen Angus made us their offer we withdrew the bull from our yearling sale. It was an offer we couldn’t turn down as we still have full use of him naturally, which we had always wanted, as well as future New Zealand semen sales,” he says. Mandayen Limousin and Angus Stud has sold semen packages to ve well-known Australian Angus studs this spring, and ushed to get embryos out of Stockman Solution S329. Mandayen will be marketing him through Agri-Gene in the 2023 season. Stokman Solution S329 is presently being drawn for semen at Tararua Breeding Centre in Woodville and comes from an exceptional cow line with dams in the pedigree selling bulls to Angus studs such as Turihaua Angus and Puketi Angus. Stockman Solution 329’s sire Sitz Resilient has also been busy producing top-notch calves for Stokman Angus – the rst stud in Australasia with progeny out of Sitz Resilient. RURAL PEOPLE » Stokman Angus Stokman Angus will also shortly have semen for sale from Stokman Solution S329 for the local market due to requests from numerous clients. “We feel Stokman Solution S329 will fast track our breeding programme. He’s in the top percentage of almost every EBV trait and comes from an exceptional cow line,” says Jake. Stokman Angus also hails from an impeccable line. Jake’s mum, Sherrie, is an American and has Angus cattle running through her bloodlines. Her family has owned Sitz Angus in the Rocky Mountains of Montana for over 90 years. Married to Mark, the couple spent seven years helping farm on Sherrie’s family ranch after a tractor accident, which took Sherrie’s father Bob’s life, before returning to New Zealand in 1997. Sherrie’s two younger brothers, Bob and Jim Sitz, still farm their very successful stud today. Stokman Angus was started in 1997 with a few embryos from some of Sherrie’s cows they had at back at Sitz Angus, and today encompasses 370 registered Angus stud cows and 60 autumn calving cows while nishing some steers and heifers. Mark runs the overall farm management with Sherrie who also takes on the administration, promotional work and cattle registrations. Jake has been home on the farm since completing his degree at Lincoln University in 2020. He’s taking over some of the farm management and gives their much-appreciated stock manager Craig Moyes a hand when needed. Craig’s wife Courtney tends to the gardens and keeps the sale barn facility looking exceptional. Stokman Angus holds its annual yearling sale in September. All the bulls in the sale are HD50k genomic tested, carcass scanned and fertility tested for increased accuracy of the EBVs and ease of mind during mating. In the stud’s 2022 sale another son of Sitz Resilient sold for $23,000 to a long-time client Peter West – the second highest price that year for an Angus yearling bull, says Jake. He says that in the 2023 yearling sale a few more exclusive sires will be offered, including the progeny of Sitz Incentive, which sold for $235,000 in America in 2022 and his dam selling for $160,000. 021 148 0322 | bluffcountry.co.nz | karl@bluffcountry.co.nz like us on Ph: Proud to work with Stokman Angus Agricultural contractors servicing the greater Rotorua region • Round & Square Baling • Rock Crushing • Loaderwagon Silage • Vegetation Mulching • Fertiliser & Muck Spreading • Earthworks & Development • Feed Supplies • Hedgemulching • Cultivation & Seed Drilling • Transport Semen from Stokman Solution S329 is presently being drawn for semen at Tararua Breeding entre in Woodville.
