14 | Unique bull sale and stud launch Rolling Heights Farm, which is owned by Charlie and Marie Norman, is now preparing for its next bull sale. Karen Phelps Rolling Heights Farm is gearing up for its second bull sale on the back of its highly successful first ever sale in 2023. Notably all bulls, a mix of two year olds and yearlings, were sold under the hammer in the 2023 sale, with the majority purchased by Waikato dairy farmers and others sold to Hereford breeders notably Arabica Hereford stud. The success of the 2023 sale extended beyond the auction creating a memorable local event. Chef Marc Soper from The Hermitage contributed to the unique experience by creating a special dining event on the 2023 sale day. The farm went beyond traditional practices by featuring local suppliers, showcasing new tractors, farm bikes, and other products. One bull at the sale was dedicated to a charity auction with other items donated by local businesses raising $8,500 in total for the Waikato Hospital Newborn Intensive Care Unit and the Child Cancer Foundation. Rolling Heights Farm, which is owned by Charlie and Marie Norman, is now preparing for its next bull sale in September, promising an even more extensive showcase of products from local businesses. The event will include another charity auction with another bull dedicated to raising funds for worthy causes. “It’s a great opportunity for local business to connect with farmers. We put on a heck of day,” says Charlie and Marie’s son Cory. The 420ha farm between Huntly and the coast has undergone a remarkable transformation in the eight years since the Normans took up the challenge with the support of Cory. With a background in the trucking industry and experience in Angus farming, Cory has played a crucial role in turning the farm into a thriving operation responsible for the day to day running of the farm, owning the cattle and initiating the charity auction. Cory’s wife Emily, a psychologist, shares the family vision and contributes to the farm’s development. The farm, now home to 150 breeding Hereford cows, primarily focuses on buying high quality stud bulls. The goal is to achieve calving ease, good fat and growth at medium to low birth weights. Cory is fulfilling his grandfather’s dream with plans to launch their own Hereford stud. “We’ve farmed commercial Hereford since 2015 and started from scratch with odds and sods of cows we could get our hands on. We’ve got a strong herd now as we put a real focus on purchasing stud sires New Zealand wide to accelerate the breeding side of things and improvement of the herd so forming our own stud is the next logical step.” He says it’s been challenging to find registered Herefords for sale. “With Herefords you have to start with registered cows. So it’s a case of finding someone who will allow us to purchase the cows and transfer the registration. My grandfather dreamed of having a Hereford stud so I’m proud to be fulfilling his dream.” • Breed for temperament, structural soundness and fertility • Easy doability, well fleshed carcass with good IMF • All cows commercially run andwinteredwith ewes on hills Find us on Facebook RiverleeHerefords&Angus HILL COUNTRY BREED FOR HILL COUNTRY FARMERS Bull Sale, 11th June 2024 ,1 pm. 2354 Rangiwahia Rd, Rangiwahia, Kimbolton, Manawatu mfcurtis@farmside.co.nz 0272282881 or 06 3282881
