Kelly Deeks RURAL SERVICES » Precision Slurry Ltd “We realised there was a market for people to do a good job of stirring and emptying ponds. So we got two slurry tankers and started growing straight away. With costs going up and restrictions coming in, more and more people are looking to get more use out of the nutrients they have on their farm already. As the price of fertiliser hits farmers where it hurts, a growing industry is emerging out of an under-utilised resource already on-farm in your effluent storage system, and Precision Slurry is here to stir, pump, and spread it accurately on farms across the Central Plateau, Bay of Plenty and South Waikato. Precision Slurry has specialised in applying dairy effluent since 2016. Glen Crafar started Precision Slurry as a solution on his own sharemilking job and together with his brother Robert were soon providing the service for other local farmers. “We realised there was a market for people to do a good job of stirring and emptying ponds,” he says. “So we got two slurry tankers and started growing straight away. With costs going up and restrictions coming in, more and more people are looking to get more use out of the nutrients they have on their farm already. “We like to think we’re at the pointy end of doing that. We only specialise in stirring, pumping, and spreading effluent and waste water, and we do a really good job of it for everyone.” Precision Slurry customers always comment “I didn’t know the pond was that deep!” “That’s the comment we’re looking for,” Glen says. “We’ve emptied out all of the sludge and sand and shit, when a lot of these ponds haven’t been cleaned out properly for 10 years or more.” Precision Slurry has also started getting into the growing specialist area of emptying above ground slurry tanks and effluent storage bladder tanks, which provide a cost-effective storage option for some situations but are tricky to empty. “It’s like trying to get sand out of a hot water bottle!” Of the stirring, pumping, and spreading process, Glen says proper stirring makes all the difference. Correct stirring will release all of the available nutrients ready for uptake by your plants. Precision Slurry uses Storth Mega Mixers for an even consistency of slurry, and an open propeller mixer to break up thick crusts in ponds. Precision Slurry is now running five 20,000 to 30,000L slurry tankers and five tractors, and applying effluent on any contour via dribble bar or umbilical system. Glen and Robert reckon effluent should be kept all together in a lined pond with no sand traps or separating, then have that pond emptied out after the first cut of silage leaving room in the pond for a nice holiday at Christmas time. As well as getting those valuable nutrients to work on those pastures, this method is less hassle and effort for the staff or sharemilkers running the farm. “Our background is in dairy farming and we understand the day-to-day pressures of all the jobs that need to be done on farm. We want to make effluent spreading as easy as possible for the farmers.” Pleased to support Precision Slurry Ltd 0800 428 453 | alpinebuildings.co.nz in everything effluent / waste water related in the Central North Island, South Waikato and Southern BOP areas.
