RURAL PEOPLE » John and Mary Allen High value bulls signal ambitious future Karen Phelps Well-established Hereford stud south of the Bombay Hills Mahuta Polled Hereford Stud has made significant investments in premium genetics, purchasing two exceptional bulls that signal its ambitious direction for the future. Owned by John and Mary Allen, last year the stud acquired Matariki Performer P24 and Colraine Washington 23 421, with the latter setting a record price of $37,000 for a yearling at the spring sale. “These additions mean we are investing in the most productive genetics we can find which in turn mean the bulls we sell to our customers have higher end productive potential and therefore profitability,” says John who founded the stud more than 40 years ago at Glen Murray. Both new bulls represent the pinnacle of Hereford breeding in Australasia. Matariki Performer, purchased in June from the Kaikoura stud, brings exceptional credentials to the breeding programme. “At the time he was in the top one per cent on IMF of recorded Hereford bulls in Australasia and is very well structured. He’s a real showpiece of a bull,” says John. The record-breaking Colraine Washington shares similarly impressive statistics with both him and Matariki Performer ranking in the top 5% for calving ease, IMF (intramuscular fat), and EMA (eye muscle area). Colraine Washington also ranks in the top 5% for growth. Both bulls are ranked in the top 1% for beef heifer index, a key indicator of profitability. “EBVs are an estimate of productive potential for a given trait. Indexes are an estimate of a dollar profitability calculated by combining EBVs.
