| 45 Good, well balanced traits of Shian Angus Russell Fredric “It will be the first crop of Taimate Major’s who is a full-flush brother to Taimate Roy.” RURAL PEOPLE » Shian Angus A total of 33 bulls were sold at the sale out of 35. The accumulation of half a century’s hard work is paying off for Shian Angus owners, the Sherson family, who are reaping the rewards of growing outstanding bulls with well-balanced traits. The stud is a partnership run by Rob and Tracy Sherson and Rob’s parents Brian and Sharon, operating from a farm that covers 760 hectares on medium hill country 11 kilometres south-east of Taumarunui. Rob and Tracy also run two sheep studs which includes selling eczema tolerant Romdale rams and South Suffolk’s. Based on past sales, beef farmers looking for top-notch bulls this year can justifiably look forward to Shian Angus’ on-farm sale on June 3 with great anticipation. At the stud’s annual sale of rising two year old bulls last year, Shian T635 sold for a whopping $75,000. “He was a cracker; you couldn’t find a fault in him really,” Rob says. “He was a beautifully structured animal with plenty of meat and had good EBV data. He was purchased by Dean McHardy of Tangihua Angus over in Gisborne. He’s been a good supporter of ours; I think that’s the third stud bull he’s bought off us.” T635 was sired by Taimate Mako out of one of Shian’s best breeding cows and has excellent scanning results for eye muscle area, fat cover and intramuscular fat. The Sherson’s even had enquiries from Australia about buying semen from T635 before the auction. A total of 33 bulls were sold at the sale out of 35 for an average of $11,333. “Even if you took the $75,000 out of the equation, we still had a really strong sale commercially for the farmers, so we are real happy with the day we had.” “We had a lot of complements on our bulls. We have clients that normally buy in the top half of the catalogue, but they were more than happy to wait till towards the end because there wasn’t really a tail in the sale. Whether you were buying lot one or lot 35 you were getting a really good quality bull.” About 38 bulls will be offered this June, including some new bloodlines. “We had a couple of new sires last year so they will have a second crop of Tangihau Thumper and KJ Big Mac’s sons, but also it will be the first crop of Taimate Major’s who is a full-flush brother to Taimate Roy.” Proudly supporting Shian Angus 027 2880980 • Semen Collection • Fertility Testing • Disease Testing ViaBull Ltd Owned by Taimate Angus, in Marlborough, straws of Taimate Roy’s semen have been sold to an Idaho cattle ranch in the United States and in Australia, plus the bull has been widely used in New Zealand. “We went down and bought a full-flush brother so we’ll have some new bloodlines again.” Shian Angus’ first priority is breeding the type of cattle the Sherson’s want, but the genetics they have developed are obviously extremely desirable to their clients. “I think the sign we’re doing the right thing is that we’ve got loyal clients that keep coming back all the time.” “‘It started with Dad in the time and effort that he put in, he’s passed that on to me; it’s an accumulation of 50 year’s hard work. You get to the point where you’re quite happy with what you’re breeding and you’re getting paid for the results.”
