| 67 Kerley Brothers Transport’s core business is in livestock cartage. RURAL SERVICES » Kerley Bros Transport barns. This side of the business is growing as more farmers see the benefits of sheltering their cows, and Hayden and Dion are now looking to add a new storage solution for their very hard to come by wood chip to help ensure a good supply going forward. As a small business comprising the brothers and one casual contract driver, Hayden says it is harder than ever to compete with the big operators who can cover everything everywhere. “The only way we can compete is by doing a great job and being friendly,” he says. “This industry can get pretty cut-throat, especially in tight times, but when your customers like working with you and have a good experience, they’ll call you again for the next job. And like any job, you’ve got to have your heart in it.” With a couple of diggers as part of the fleet, and Hayden and Dion building races and other on-farm excavation tasks whenever the truck work slows down, Kerley Brothers Transport could grow its team if good drivers were more readily available. But they’re not. “You’ve got to have a good head on your shoulders in the livestock industry,” Hayden says. “It’s not just driving a truck. You’ve got to be a good operator, you’ve got to be stock savvy as well, and then you’ve also got to be a people person as well. There is quite a lot involved.” “You’ve got to be a good operator, you’ve got to be stock savvy as well.” Proud to support Kerley Bros Transport 07 377 2411 / 027 DUDLEYS (027 383 5397) office@dmpltd.co.nz www.dudleymechanical.com Proudly supporting Kerley Bros Transport Proud to support Kerley Bros Transport swede@taurangalivestockltd.co.nz
